An Awesome Experience Watching #RakOfAegis!

The Philippine Educational Theater Association’s (PETA) “Rak of Aegis”, uses Aegis’s songs in the key of sawi to tell a story of human resilience and recovery after a devastating natural calamity. The title is a pun on “Rock of Ages”, the five-time Tony-nominated rock musical featuring classic rock songs from ‘80s glam metal bands.

With its successful comedic approach to social issues plus catchy musical arrangements, “Rak of Aegis” brings to life the music of power pop band Aegis through an engaging narrative that highlights the strong spirit and resilience of the Filipinos.

As PETA artistic director Maribel Legarda puts it, “The larger objective of PETA in doing original work is always really to be able to express what is the Filipino sentiment, whether it’s in music or performance, or whatever it is through art. We cannot be a world class force if we do not have our own originality!”

Jam Packed!

The musical started with unusual reminders to the audience not to sing with the cast or else they’ll be dunked in flood water for “tin sikands (10 seconds). which draw laughter to everyone. I will not spoil other reminders as I want you to personally enjoy the humor.

Aside from tackling social issues and natural calamities, “Rak of Aegis” also revolves around the love interests of the main characters, whose names are derived from those of Aegis band members as a tribute to the Filipino novelty rock group that made waves in the 90’s.A story of love, fame and resilience, the narrative revolves around the residents of the flooded village of Villa Venizia. At the center of the story is Aileen, a young mall promodizer caught in the web of finding love and seeking fame to support her family.

Aileen’s family like the other residents is greatly affected by the flood. Her father Kiel is in the brink of losing his job as baranggay captain Mary Jane plans to close her failing shoe factory. Knowing that her income will never be enough to make ends meet, Aileen decides to make a video in the hopes of becoming the next YouTube sensation. Aileen’s suitor Tolits posts the video online, unaware that it will put Villa Venizia under the spotlight and change their lives forever.

“Rak of Aegis” is a musical filled with visual spectacle showcasing the Pinoy’s natural love for music. The musical is created by the same women behind PETA’s hit comedy musical “Care Divas,” PETA Artistic Director Maribel Legarda and Palanca Award-winning writer Liza Magtoto, with musical arrangement and musical direction by actor-musician Myke Salomon.

the cast

“Rak of Aegis” also consists of a talented artistic team which includes Gio Gahol (choreography), Jonjon Villareal (lighting design), Mio Infante (production design), Carlo Pagunaling (costume design), Maco Custodio (shoe design), and Joan Pamintuan (accessory design).

Ready to RAK!

After the sold-out shows this month, for sure, there will be re-runs next year (2015). You should definitely watch Rak of Aegis as this musical illuminates the typical Filipino problems in the flood prone areas. More than that, this musical is truly remarkable, awesome, world-class and worth every inch of your penny.

Looking forward for more PETA prods in the future

Special thanks to Tito Toots and PETA for inviting me to this one of a kind production!
