#TheaterPH - Usapang X - Relatable and Hilarious!

A taboo is a vehement prohibition of an action based on the belief that such behavior is either too sacred or too accursed for ordinary individuals to undertake, under threat of supernatural punishment. Such prohibitions are present in virtually all societies. The word has been somewhat expanded in the social sciences to strong prohibitions relating to any area of human activity or custom that is sacred or forbidden based on moral judgment and religious beliefs. Breaking a taboo" is usually considered objectionable by society in general, not merely a subset of a culture. – Wikipedia

FEU Theater Guild's Curtain Call for Usapang X

Usapang X, a play, is a Far Eastern University Theater Guild production written and directed by Dudz Teraña. It is a UP Curtain Call Award-winning piece which is humorous and has a refreshing view of what real people do inside the comfort of their bathrooms. Tackling topics ranging from homosexuality to cheating, Usapang X will make you feel the pressures of society and make you realize that maybe the toilet is the only place to escape that.

I was lucky enough to watch it as part of #FringeMNL Arts Festival. SDA Black Box Theater was full house for its February 23, 8pm show. Some of the audience were requested to sit on the floor just to accommodate them. Base on my research, Usapang X is one of the most controversial plays that FEU Theater Guild has been staged. No wonder why it has been tagged as such after watching the whole presentation.

I am impressed with how these young actors and actresses portrayed each scene given them very delicate topics. Thank you to the ever genius Dudz Teraña for voicing out and sharing his perspective to everyone. Although some of the scenes were predictable, the writer uses it as its advantage making the piece more relatable.  I was laughing my ass off most of the time. Commendation goes to performers on these scenes:

1. Letter of Reactions with textmate
2. Tikbalang, Duwende, 10-20
3. Student Council
4. Single Pa Din
5. Good Day Restaurant
6. Kainin ang Saging

Sharing you some of the photos grabbed from others who watch the show:

This will make sense of course after you watch Usapang X. So if you haven’t seen it, you MUST! For those who already did, what’s your favorite scene?

#TheaterPH - 5 Reasons why you MUST watch MANHID: The Pinoy Superhero Musical

It is with brilliant mind if you going to ask yourself questions of ‘what ifs’ and supply arguments with ‘buts’. MANHID is a musical which just entertained the thought of “What if EDSA revolution failed?” and used heroes and villains with superpowers to convey a powerful message across people from all walks of life. Here are the reasons why you MUST watch MANHID: The Pinoy Superhero Musical.

1: It is 100% Pinoy!

MANHID is 100% Pinoy made; from the acclaimed director Aureus Solito also known as “Kanakan-Balintagos”,   to its producers and technical team; from the roster of talented actors from different theater groups like Tanghalang Pilipino, 9Works, Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA); and internationally acclaimed jazz funk rock band Radioactive Sago Project, who performs the music live, Filipino talent unfolds all throughout the run. After watching the musical play, one can say that “I’m truly proud to be a Filipino.”

2: Catchy Compositions!

Since it’s all original, songs used in the play were composed by Kanakan- Balintagos himself, Carina Evangelista, Vicente de Jesus and The Eraserheads (Ely Buendia, Raymund Marasigan, Buddy Zabala and Marcus Adoro). Compositions come to life through Francis de Veyra as Musical Director, Joed Caballero Balsamo as Resident Music Director, TJ Ramos as Sound Designer and Keyboardist and  Radioactive Sago Project as the In House Band. I end up buying the official soundtrack and had a little hangover while it plays on my friend’s car going back home.

3: It’s a re-stage!

MANHID has first premiered at the Palma Hall of University of the Philippines – Diliman in 1991. Ambitious as it may seem but this musical has been a great part of theater goers and arts enthusiasts must watch during the early 90’s. People still remember how the musical transformed and rocked audience’s life. One of my Instagram posts has been reposted several times by people who actually watched the first run of the musical and it’s fun to interact with them by knowing their favorite characters from the play.

4: Award winning cast!

The cast of MANHID in 'ULAN',the show's finale

Spearheading the cast as Bantugan is Sandino Martin who won Best Actor at the Cinema One Originals Awards Night for his role in “Esprit de Corps”. Alternating the role is Ballet Philippines Apprentice, Mark Anthony Grantos. Female lead, Lam-Ang, is portrayed by Regina de Dera, a resident member of the Tanghalang Pilipino Actors Company, who won Gawad Buhay award for Outstanding Female Lead Performance in a Play in 2013 for “Der Kaufmann”.   Alternate for Lam-Ang’s role is Teetin Villanueva who earned her nominations for the 26th Aliw Awards and BroadwayWorld Philippines’ Awards in 2013 for her thesis role performance as Hermana Augusta Beata in Floy Quintos’ COLLECTION. Joining the casts are alternating for the role of Allunsina are Gold Villar and  Kim Molina from Rak of Aegis, KL Dizon, a graduate of the Philippine High School for the Arts as Urduja, Jean Judith Javier, appeared in Noli Me Tangere the Opera as the madwoman (Sisa), as Dilim and Ronah Rastata as Lagrimas. For the villains, Mayen Estanero as Demonyita Mamalahima, the Minister of Humanity, Fred Lo and Ricardo Magno alternate as Radya Indarapatra and other artists.

5: It’s from Ballet Philippines!
photo from www.philstar.com

After sold out and flawless performances from Cinderella, La Revolucion Filipina, and Giselle, Ballet Philippines brings out another best from their newest production. Ballet Philippines continue to challenge themselves from jumping to traditional ballet pieces to modern contemporary dances as they share themselves to the stage. BP always show audiences new dynamics, beautiful choreography base executions and effortless combinations that transcends through the stage wherever they perform. MANHID is one of my favorite productions that Ballet Philippines has presented to the theater table.

Fringe Manila is the perfect platform for emerging and local established artists to take risks and share their work to diverse audiences. Here are the 5 Shows That Interest Me About The Very First FRINGE MANILA!

1. Usapang X

Written/directed by Dudz Teraña, this UP Curtain Call Award-winning piece is a humorous and refreshing view of what real people do inside the comfort of their bathrooms. “Usapang X” features a series of monologues. It delves into sensitive social issues and concerns involving youth, such as gender and sexuality. It explores how the youth struggle and cope while entangled in a web of society’s ‘wrongs’. According to FringeManila.com, this material is Rated SPG. Shows at February 23 and 26, 8pm at De La Salle College of Saint Benilde, School of Design and Arts.

2. Reconfigure

RECON: to gather information. FIGURE: a shape, body or structure.

Misshapen physicalities, transformed beings and altered lives. Reconfigure is a twinbill production featuring Ea Torrado’s Dysmorphilia, which premiered at Imaginarium: A Multi-arts festival of the Absurd, and PJ Rebullida’s The Sky Changed, showcased at the WIFI Body Contemporary Dance Festival. Compounded to evoke transformation, manipulation and conscious change, Both works continue to unravel the forces at work on how the body is presented and consumed in relation to ideas of self-perception and symbolic rebirth.

Dysmorphilia costumes were made by award-winning Multimedia artist-designer, Leeroy New.

3. MANHID: The Pinoy Superhero Musical

Comic book fanatics, musical theater lovers, and political activists are bound to be moved by Ballet Philippines’ newest venture, “MANHID: The Pinoy Superhero Musical”. Inspired from comic book super heroes of the 60 - 90’s – MANHID introduces a new generation of Filipino super heroes redefined for today’s times. Set in an alternate present day Philippines where the EDSA revolution failed, this musical features heroes and villains with superpowers, and a people sick with Kamanhiran (Apathy). “MANHID” is the final production in BP’s 45th anniversary season. Show dates: Feb 20 (8pm) / Feb 21 (2pm and 6pm) / Feb 22 (2pm).

4. Boy in the Bathroom

Fresh from its critically acclaimed showing at last year’s Imaginarium Festival, The Boy in the Bathroom is a quirky yet refreshingly sophisticated musical that explores that exhilarating feeling of finding the answer to life’s questions and taking that strong leap of faith.

This quirky, Off-Broadway musical which critics have dubbed as “widely entertaining and yet hauntingly poignant” explores the relationship between OCD-inflicted David and his overbearing mother Pam. In a singular moment, everything in David’s life comes to a halt as he locks himself in the bathroom, forging a world of daydreams, toilet paper, and make-believe. When a girl named Julie enters the equation, however, he finds himself falling in love and wondering whether it’ll be just enough to make him open the door and venture to the unknown.

The musical stars Broadway World award-winning theater actor and Aliw Award nominee Topper Fabregas, Gawad Buhay Award-winning actress Caisa Borromeo, and veteran actress and star of West End Sheila Francisco. Show dates: Feb 19 (8pm) / Feb 21 (5.30pm).

5. Dance Until You Shatter Yourself

DUYSY is an exploration of the individual's pursuit of truth throughout ones lifetime. Drawing from the meditational practices of the Mevlevi Order [or whirling dervishes] in Sufism, Green Glass Door offers Fringe-goers a one-man durational movement piece that examines the limitations of human physical/ mental/ spiritual endurance and asks the question, “When all other meanings fall away, what is there left to believe?” Catch Dance Until You Shatter Yourself at Tanghalang Huseng Batute (CCP Studio Theater), February 26, 2015 (8pm) and  March 1, 2015 (3pm).

To know more, you may visit www.FringeManila.com or https://www.ticketworld.com.ph/fringemanila to purchase your tickets.

Fringe represents the voices of artists and artistic genres that both challenge and reflect traditional and contemporary art forms. The Philippines is now taking its place in this extraordinary revolution. “There is a growing renaissance of art by future movers and shakers in the industry that create work driven by their experience and social consciousness,” says Festival Director and co-founder Andrei Nikolai Pamintuan. Fringe Manila is significantly important because it was created under spontaneous freedom of expression of tens of thousands of creative souls, from all walks of life, at all stages of their careers, and representing all art forms.” He adds.

How about you? What interest you for the upcoming #FringeMNL?

#TheaterPH - 7 Reasons Why You MUST Watch Red Turnip Theater’s Time Stands Still!

Weeks after watching Time Stands Still, it kept me thinking on how I will share this awesome production to you, my readers and convince you to actually buy tickets and experience the roller coaster ride of emotions. This is not, in any way, a paid post so I can share to you the most honest reasons why you MUST watch Red Turnip Theater’s Time Stands Still.

1. The Material

Time Stands Still is written by Pulitzer Prize winner Donald Margulies. It was nominated for two (2) Tony Awards for Best Play and Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play for Laura Linney.

2. The setting

You’ll be amazed on how the set design conspired and complimented with sound and lights engineering. Thanks to the bright minds of Marta Lovina, Denis Lagdameo, Toni Munoz and John Batalla. The usage of digital images from acclaimed photojournalist Rem Zamora added a visual twist to the play.

3. It’s a Red Turnip Theater Production

Come on! It’s from Red Turnip Theater so why have doubts watching this piece? Red Turnip Theater although new in the scene delivers a vibrant colour to Philippine theater. Influence might be too foreign but it’s time also to educate and share to Filipino audience pieces like Rabbit Hole, Cock etc. Founded by great and passionate artists, Red Turnip Theater will always bring something interesting to the table and that’s for sure!

4. Brilliant and Caliber Cast

Anna Abad Santos and Nonnie Buencamino being a powerhouse in the industry gave justice to the critical and delicate role of Sarah and James. Nonnie being an award winning character actor gave a new light as he portrayed a loving and understanding partner. Anna on the other hand showed extreme emotion as she shares to the audience what it was like to hold it all together after a traumatizing experience. This will more make sense after you watch the play! Be ready for a roller coaster ride of emotions.

5. Giannina Ocampo

Giannina Ocampo is gorgeous! It’s my first time to see her on theater and I was impressed. Her character Mandy serves as the voice of reason, the representation of normality and someone who is innocent with genuine compassion. She just shines all throughout. Wait for the scene where she gave her piece of advice to Sarah. It’s ‘tagos to the bones’.

6. Relationship vs. Passion

It will always come to our lives that we need to choose between things we love to have and thing we love to do. There will always be trade off. As the saying goes, “You can’t really have the BEST of both worlds.” It will depend on one’s priorities in life. Time Stands Still will be a question of what will YOU pursue. Career or Relationship? It’s for you to find out what the characters will choose.

7. Drinking Spree

milliokerestaurant

Since the play has a strong foreign influence, drinking is definitely allowed. Red Turnip Theater, together with their sponsors, lets audience drink before, during and after the play. We know that creativity flourish after having some drinks. So, go ahead and help yourselves to extract those creative juices within. Be sure to stay after the production as point of views will come from different angles on how each one interprets this awesome play.
