#RedTurnipTheater opens their 3rd Season with Moises Kaufman's 33 Variations

Red Turnip Theater is back for another season! Their splashy debut season gave us the much talked about hits CLOSER and COCK, which was followed up with the critically-acclaimed sophomore season of RABBIT HOLE and last February’s TIME STANDS STILL. All four productions have gone on to reap multiple awards and nominations from the Aliw and BroadwayWorld Philippine Awards, with COCK topping critics’ lists as the Best Play of 2014.  True to form, this band of 5 actors (Ana Abad Santos, Topper Fabregas, Jenny Jamora, Cris Villonco, Rem Zamora) promises to push the envelope further as they show another facet to Red Turnip this year.

Opening the Third Season is 33 VARIATIONS by Moisés Kaufman.
33 VARIATIONS tells the story of a renowned musicologist, Katherine Brandt, who is on a mission to discover why Beethoven composed the Diabelli variations, considered as one of his greatest masterpieces. Her daughter, Clara, is on a mission to find her place in her mother's world. Together, they maneuver through Beethoven's colorful life, their own challenging relationship, and somehow find their answers within his music. Shifting between periods and places, 33 VARIATIONS is the story of mothers and daughters and the legacies we long to leave behind.

33 VARIATIONS made its Broadway premiere in 2009, famously marking Jane Fonda’s return to the theater after a 46-year absence in the role of Katherine. It went on to garner several Tony Award nominations, including Best Play and Best Actress for Fonda. It had previously won the Edgerton New American Play Award in 2007 and the Steinberg American Theatre Critics Association Best New Play Award in 2008.

Shamaine Centera-Buencamino

Leading the Manila cast are theater icons Shamaine Centenera-Buencamino and Teroy Guzman. Fresh off her heralded turns in Tanghalang Pilipino’s “Juego de Peligro” and the CinemaOne Original indie “Lorna”, Shamaine steps into the role of Katherine. This is sure to add to her list of memorable performances that already include Queen Elizabeth (“Mary Stuart”), Elizabeth Proctor (“The Crucible”), Masha (“Three Sisters”) and Jocasta (“Oedipus Rex”) just to name a few.

Teroy Guzman

Teroy Guzman plays Ludwig Van Beethoven. He is most recently known for his King Lear in the PETA adaptation “Haring Lear”, Tiyoy Berning in Tanghalang Ateneo’s “Rite of Passage” and the title role in Anton Juan’s “Screen: Macbeth”. Notorious for shying away from the spotlight, Red Turnip is glad to give Guzman center stage in his return to the contemporary drama.

Rem Zamora

Roselyn Perez

Paolo O'hara

Theater stalwarts Paolo O’ Hara, Rem Zamora and Roselyn Perez make up the supporting cast. O’Hara (“Hedda Gabler”, “Titus Andronicus”, “Tatlong Mariya”) and Zamora (“The 39 Steps”, “Skin Deep”, “Glorious”), complete the Beethoven flashback scenes as Anton Diabelli and Anton Schindler respectively. Perez (“Equus”, “Frozen”, “The Normal Heart”) is Gertrude Ladenburger, Katherine’s stern and loyal confidante.

Ina Fabregas

Franco Chan

Rounding out the cast are fresh faces Ina Fabregas and Franco Chan. Fabregas is Clara, Katherine’s estranged daughter who slowly starts to fall in love with her mother’s male nurse, Mike Clark, played by Chan.

Ejay Yatco

33 VARIATIONS also marks Red Turnip’s first show to incorporate live music: critical moments in the play are underscored by the Diabelli Variations themselves, played live and on stage by Ejay Yatco (“Sa Wakas”, “Dani Girl”, “The Boy in the Bathroom”). Although he is mostly known as a composer and musical director, the 24 year-old has also competed at the 2013 World Championship of Performing Arts under the Classical Piano category, where he made it to the final 3 instrumentalists of the world and took home one gold and three silver medals. Yatco will be playing the Variations on a baby grand piano, provided by LYRIC.

Jenny Jamora makes her directorial debut.

“We had decided on this show almost two years ago, we knew it was what we had wanted to open the Third Season with. This play has been simmering in my head since then. ’33 Variations’ is such an elegant, intricate piece of work and I am excited by the challenge of bringing it to life. I’ve also surrounded myself with a powerhouse cast and a young, energetic production team. I cannot wait for everyone to see what they’ve all brought to the table.  It’s going to be unlike anything you’ve seen from Red Turnip so far.”

33 VARIATIONS opens July 24 and runs weekends until August 23 at Whitespace, Makati.

Tickets are available through TicketWorld (891-9999 or www.ticketworld.com.ph) or Red Turnip Theater (redturniptheater@gmail.com or https://www.facebook.com/RedTurnipTheater)

#TheaterPH - The Ateneo de Manila University’s Fine Arts Program presents AUTHORIAL INTENT!

Manuel and Missy as Character B and A.

The Ateneo de Manila University’s Fine Arts Program presents "AUTHORIAL INTENT" by Itamar Moses, a postmodern romantic comedy that confronts the audience with a rich and self-aware story,  written with both insider knowledge of the mechanics of drama and a shrewd grasp of the multilayered ways in which people deceive themselves.

" AUTHORIAL INTENT " puts its audience behind the fourth wall of a condominium shared by a couple, referred to only as A and B. They have just begun to live together. Three days after moving in together, a woman tells a man she doesn't love him anymore --- move out !!!. Suddenly, the play itself undergoes a parallel breakdown, with the two characters speaking their objectives and subtext instead of their dialogue. Finally, the two actors step out of character, to look back and wonder: Is there anything at all behind the artifice?

Scene 3 with Manuel and Missy

But the masterful stroke of playwright Itamar Moses' pen further unmasks the layers of truth and craftsmanship behind the encounter, from their character objectives and conversational tactics to the revelation that the condominium is actually the set of a play, where A and B find themselves as actors in a very real world, perpetually in search of something to be sure about. In a space where everyone is acting, how do you know if it's real?

The comic, metafictive approach of " AUTHORIAL INTENT " invites viewers to consider the complex and often adversarial relationship between the vision of the author, the inner lives of the characters (and the actors embodying them), and you, the audience.

But you don't need to be a theater critic or art student to appreciate its perfectly-timed hilarity, its clarity of voice, and its ultimately compassionate outlook on human life in general and relationships in particular.

" AUTHORIAL INTENT " has something to offer anyone who has ever wondered just what it is their significant other wants.

Missy Maramara, MFA-wielding instructor of the Ateneo de Manila's Fine Arts Program and English Department and a member of the Silly People's Improv Theatre (SPIT), plays Character A, a woman In a space where everyone is acting, how do you know if it's real?

Carlo Rivera, who lectures at the Ateneo de Manila's English Department when he's not flying airplanes, plays Character B, a neurotic film geek who knows exactly what he wants – Character A.

In line with the university's desire to open new horizons for deserving and capable neophytes, two young students have found themselves onstage as alternate members of the cast. Ann Nicole Ong, an AB English Literature senior with a talent for painting and a track record of leadership in creative projects ranging from Humanities Week to the InTACT program lends her unique voice to Character A, while Manuel Jan Molina, a Management Engineering sophomore and deploys his acting training from Loyola Marymount University and ABS-CBN's Starmagic workshops to bring Character B to life. Their participation is a testament to the Ateneo Fine Arts Program's devotion to making theatrical dreams come true.

The Alternates: Ann Nicole Ong as Character A and Carlo Rivera as Character B.

" AUTHORIAL INTENT " was written by widely published New York playwright, Itamar Moses, author of the full-length plays Outrage, Bach At Leipzig, Celebrity Row, The Four of Us, Yellowjackets, Back Back Back, and Completeness, and various short plays and one-acts. His work has appeared Off-Broadway and elsewhere in New York, at regional theatres across the country and in Canada, and has been published by Faber & Faber, Heinemann Press, Playscripts Inc., Samuel French, Inc., and Vintage. Mr. Moses holds an MFA in Dramatic Writing from NYU and has taught playwriting at Yale and NYU. He is a member of the Dramatists Guild, MCC Playwrights Coalition, Naked Angels Mag 7, and is a New York Theatre Workshop Usual Suspect. He was born in Berkeley, California, and now lives in Brooklyn, New York.
The artistic and production team of " AUTHORIAL INTENT " led by Missy Maramara (Director), is composed of Ateneo Fine Arts students, alumni and friends, Miguel Ocampo (Assistant Director), David Mercado (Production Designer), Syd Alcantara (Lights Designer) and Erwin Comendador (Music Director), Arianne Lim and Nicholas Ang (Production Managers), Reg Acquitana (Marketing Manager), Arsenio Armas and Ayen Mendoza (Stage Managers).

It upholds artistic excellence, shaped by a rigorous practice of the craft, a critical appreciation of theory and history, and a heightened sense of imagination and expression in the context of the Filipino sensibility and service to others. In line with the university's desire to open new horizons for deserving and capable neophytes, young students and fresh graduates have found themselves as members of the cast and crew.

With THE Missy Maramara and Manuel Jan Molina who did a breakthrough performance as Character B.

#FoodPH: iL Ponticello - Not Your Typical Italian Restaurant

When you heard of Italian food, what come's to your mind? A typical answer would be pizza or pasta. I am very honored to re-visit one of the best Italian Restaurants in Makati that goes in the name of iL Ponticello.

iL Ponticello means "The Bridge" which lets the customers bridge their hungry and longing appetites to full and satisfied gastronomic degustations once they tried authentic Southern Italian cooking. iL Ponticello's menu has been revamped since last year (2014) under a new management with a new culinary team headed by chef Panky Lopez.

We started our Italian food adventure by trying out Portobello Alla Griglia which is composed of succulent grilled portobello mushrooms paired with creamy fresh mozarella di bufala and a smoky ricotta cheese, drizzled with extra virgin olive and basil oils. I love the combination of mozarella and ricotta cheeses with mushroom, which make the dish more tasteful and flavorful.

Portobello Alla Griglia

Next on the list is their prime offering which is the Rotolo. It is a rolled pizza with Italian meats and cheeses from the famed Emilia-Romagna region. The Rotolo Originale is priced at 480 and actually good for sharing. Mortadella, Ricotta, Tomato Cream sauce laced with Pesto sounds and looks sinful and delectable. I just can't contain myself after having my first bite and I moaned with satisfaction. This one is TRULY a MUST TRY!

Rotolo Originale

Pizza Valdostana is chef Panky's signature recipe marrying North and South Italian flavors having Parma ham, Gorgonzola cream, Mozarella and Arugula on it. Adding the parma ham gives it more kick and with the aragula balancing the strong flavor coming from the meat. Pizza dough are band made, band stretched and band tossed. The dough is thin and crispy but still have a bite of chewy-ness on it.

Pizza Valdostana

After having a bite of Rotolo Originale and Pizza Valdostana, I thought I am already sold with iL Ponticello's gourmet Italian cuisine. Wait until you try their Lasagna Carbonara! Two (2) of my favorite pasta dish in one. You should see my eyes glistening when I heard that they will be serving this dish. Lasagna Carbonara is composed of mozarella cream, Pancetta Tesa strips, Grana Padana cheese and whole egg yolk crown. This dish is cooked to PERFECTION!

Lasagna Carbonara

I believe that a great meal should always be finished with a dessert. iL Ponticello serves their Cheesecake Caramel Panna Cotta. This delicately cooked cream with vanilla seeds is topped with silky cheesecake crumble and melt-in-your-mouth dulce de leche. I am ready to hit the sack after tasting this. Perfect to end the roller coaster ride of flavours.

Cheesecake Caramel Panna Cotta.

Italian food is not just about pizza and pasta. If you want to try authentic Italian dishes then you should check out iL Ponticello! iL Ponticello is located at 2nd floor, Antel Corporate Center, 121 Valero St. Near V.A. Rufino St. Salcedo Village, Makati City. For more information about iL Ponticello, visit their Zomato page here.

#EventsPH: Fifty Shades of Marketing: "The Marketing Masters will see you now!"

It is every marketer’s goal to be able to control the market, making consumers believe a brand’s promise and behave favorably. But according to a marketing guru, to be in control, brands must first learn to submit. “Marketing is always about brands being dominant and consumers submitting. But in reality, every brand has to submit first because the submissive is the one who is in control,” explains Donald Lim, over-all chairman of the Philippine Marketing Association’s “Fifty Shades of Marketing.”

He further explains by citing Facebook as an example. While all brands want to engage their customers, some are afraid of setting up a Facebook Page because of the fear of getting bad feedback or comments. But Lim believes that should not be the case. “Creating a channel for interactive engagement with the market is an example of submitting to them. When you start submitting to your market, you will learn how to manage. Eventually, you will realize that you become the dominant.”

This lesson in marketing is pretty much parallel to the premise of the book, “Fifty Shades of Grey”. Taking inspiration from the bestseller, the theme of this year’s 1st Asian Marketing Leadership Summit is “Fifty Shades of Marketing.”

The Asian Marketing Leadership Summit (AMLS) is the new brand of the annual marketing conference that PMA stages. But unlike the previous conference, this year is much more of a gathering of marketing leaders, a summit where there will be more discussions and interactions.

The four panelist during the press conference. L – R: Mr. Donald Lim, Ms. Yayu Javier, Ms. Arlene Padua and Mr. Henry Tenedero at Boracay Function Room of Sofitel Philippine Plaza.

To fit the theme even more, the association has invited fifty different marketing practitioners, each bringing what they know -- their own marketing shade. “We felt that every marketing person has his or her own shade of creativity and innovation. Basically 50 shades mean 50 kinds of marketing persons showing their expertise.”

The event will be held on July 8 and 9 at the Sofitel Tent. Senator Chiz Escudero will deliver the keynote during the plenary session while Francis Kong will close the plenary. On day two, ABS-CBN CEO Charo Santos will open the session while the closing plenary will be an ABS-CBN Special Aquino & Abunda session with celebrity guests.

The summit is not only an opportunity for every marketer to grow and learn. It also serves as a venue for them to get to know fellow marketers. “Participants could learn as much by choosing the track that they want. They should also take this chance to network like they’ve never networked before,” advises Lim.

Visit www.50shadesofmarketing.com.ph for more details about the 1st Asian Marketing Leadership Summit  or contact Lira Ligero at amls@philippinemarketing.net.ph with phone number +02-638-7700.

#FoodPH: Rye Tasting Room - a place for alcoholic exploration!

In my previous blog post, I visited iL Ponticello, an Italian Restaurant, which is located in Salcedo Village, Makati City. iL Ponticello has a drink buddy restaurant called Rye Tasting Room which offers a wide variety of alcoholic beverages ranging from whisky, vodka, rum, tequila, gin, wine, name it! I call it a restaurant within a restaurant.

I love the semi rustic look and vibe.

Rye Tasting Room is generous enough to serve us their Seared Spiced Tuna Loin which is a lightly seared spice crusted tuna oil with wasabi aioli. I am not a fan of Tuna but this one is an exception. Perfect to pair with a glass of whiskey!

Seared Spiced Tuna Loin

Porchetta Panino is made with Panini bread and iL Ponticello's signature Porchetta alla Romana. It is a Roman-style whole pork belly, seasoned with fennel and garlic for a minimum of 6 hours. It has caramelized onion, roasted garlic aioli and salsa verde. It is served with ale-battered french fries. The crunch in every bite of the pork skin sounded like angels singing from heaven.

Porchetta Panino

Rye Tasting Room also served Makers Edition 4 Cheese Wagyu Burger which is made up of 1/3 lbs. of Wagyu Beef Patty smothered in homemade recipe cheese sauce, lettuce, tomato, buttery brioche bun with ale-battered french fries. I love the patty not being so beefy. It has the right combination of saltiness and I love hove sinful it is with all the cheese and everything in between.

Makers Edition 4 Cheese Wagyu Burger

Best way to end this gastronomic feast? Finish it with a dessert! Tried Butter Maple Bourbon Milk Shake and Tennessee Chocolate Marble "French Toast". Milk Shake is made out of extra thick homemade butter maple bourbon and the marble is pan-fried in butter until crisp golden brown. The butter maple bourbon milk shake is for those who are too adventurous! :)

Butter Maple Bourbon Milk Shake and Tennessee Chocolate Marble "French Toast"

Rye Tasting Room is a perfect place for your alcohol explorations. You may visit them at 2nd floor, Antel Corporate Center, 121 Valero St. Near V.A. Rufino St. Salcedo Village, Makati City. For more information about Rye Tasting Room, visit their Zomato page here.

#TheaterPH - Philippine Adaptation of Larry Kramer's The Normal Heart! #TheNormalHeartMNL

AAI / The Necessary Theatre proudly announces the Asian premiere of "THE NORMAL HEART" - the 2011 Tony Award Winner for Best Revival of a Play about the early rise of the HIV-AIDS crisis in New York City in the early 1980s. During this period, a deadly epidemic was decimating North America's gay population, killing people in the thousands, devastating an entire generation and changing the way people think about sex forever.

Written by playwright and activist Larry Kramer, "THE NORMAL HEART" is a largely autobiographical play that puts a human face to an issue often mired in numbers, facts and statistics as seen through the eyes of writer/activist Ned Weeks, the openly gay founder of a prominent HIV advocacy group. He watches in horror as friends and lovers fall prey to a mysterious virus targeting his community.

For its Manila run, "THE NORMAL HEART" is set to open on July 3 (Fri) 8pm with succeeding limited performances on July 4 (Sat) 3pm & 8pm; July 5 (Sun) 3pm & 8pm at the Carlos P. Romulo auditorium, RCBC Plaza, Makati City.

Topnotch theater actor Bart Guingona (who also directs the play) shall essay the role of the very intense activist Ned Weeks who is both difficult and charming.
Richard Cunanan shall essay the role of Ben Weeks, Ned’s brother, a lawyer, conservative, successful, tolerant of gays, loves his brother.

Topper Fabregas plays the role of Felix, a closeted, attractive, NY Times reporter.

TV personality TJ Trinidad will play the role of Bruce, the very handsome, charismatic, All-American banker, still in the closet.

Roselyn Perez is Emma, the fiercely independent doctor and researcher. Opinionated. A fighter.

Red Concepcion plays the role of Tommy, the funny, outrageous Southern boy who is all the way out of the closet.

Jef Flores will take on multiple roles such as Craig, Grady and the Hiram Keebler City Hall representative.

Nor Domingo will play the role of Mickey, the Jewish victim with a sense of humor.

A fierce indictment of a world unwilling to confront the AIDS epidemic, " THE NORMAL HEART " polarized the gay community when it was first performed at New Yorkís Public Theatre in 1985 where it earned a Dramatists Guild Marton Award, the City Lights Award, the Sarah Siddons Award for the best play of the year, and a nomination for an Olivier Award.

In 2000, the Royal National Theatre named The Normal Heart one of the 100 greatest plays of the 20th century.

After a successful 1985 Off-Broadway production, the play was revived in Los Angeles and London and again Off-Broadway in 2004.

In 2011 The Normal Heart received its Broadway debut, earning rave reviews and a number of prestigious awards: Tony Awards for Best Revival of a Play, Best Featured Actress (Ellen Barkin) and Best Featured Actor (John Benjamin Hickey); Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Revival of a Play, Outstanding Director of a Play and Outstanding Ensemble; the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Revival of a Play; and a New York Drama Critics Circle Special Citation.

The film adaptation of "THE NORMAL HEART" debuted on the HBO premium pay cable channel last May 25, 2014.

Amidst controversy, however, "THE NORMAL HEART" has endured, and today this document of recent history is as relevant and powerful as it ever was ñ a reminder that battles for justice, equality and dignity are not just things of the past.

The artistic team of " THE NORMAL HEART" is led by Baby Imperial and Coco Anne doing set design, Mark Philipp Espina doing projections, Don Taduran graphic design.

The production team is composed of Dodo Lim producer, Mariko Yasuda production manager, Ronah Rostata stage manager.

" THE NORMAL HEART " is produced with special arrangement from Samuel French. Ticket prices for " THE NORMAL HEART " are: Php1,500 orchestra center / Php1,000 orchestra side & loge / Php500 balcony.
