#MMFF2016 - Trailers and Thoughts!

Metro Manila Film Festival 2016 has been controversial the moment the selection committee announced the Top 8 competing films. It's not your usual Vice Ganda, Tito, Vic and Joey, Kris Aquino, and Lily Monteverde kind of entries this time around. Everyone's in shock that none of those expected films were chosen as festivals' front runners.

Others react negatively on this drastic change as Filipinos were used to watch straightforward films during the MMFF. On the other hand, the minorities applauded, celebrated and were really glad for the said change as more audiences will be exposed to deep, intelligent, well crafted bunch of Filipino films. Personally, I am really glad that Metro Manila Film Festival chose these eight (8) films that will challenge what has been the norm for the longest time. Filipinos deserve high quality, full-house entertaining movies that everyone can relate to. At the end of the day, it will all be our pride, our treasure, our creative juices that will be known not just in our country but worldwide.

Sharing you the trailers of the Metro Manila Film Festival entries for 2016 and my personal thoughts after watching the full length movie. This blog post will be edited as days goes by.

#TravelPH - Sandbox in Alviera at Night!

The SandBox in Alviera has announced that it is extending operating hours for guests to enjoy all the outdoor adventure park's attractions until 9 PM every Friday and Saturday. Weekends become extra special with the "SandBox Holiday Beats" concert.

Alviera, an Ayala Land sustainable estate in partnership with Leonio Land, is located in Porac, Pampanga. The estate is accessible via NLEX-SCTEX and is envisioned to become a regional growth center of Central Luzon.

“SandBox in Alviera is popular with families, especially those with small children. Our newest facility will service the needs of families with little kids. This way, all family members, not just the adults, can have a great time in Sandbox,” said Jomi De Guzman, Alviera Project Development Manager.

Li'l People,a new entertainment facility welcomes children up to 12 years old. The air-conditioned indoor playground is filled with colorful play areas where children can interact with each other. Educational toys abound to help them learn while playing.

New dining choices have also opened in SandBox. El Pedro Cubano is an authentic Cuban restaurant that offers Cuban sandwiches, arroz, mariquitas (chips with salsa), tucca fritas (cassava fries with salsa), tamales, and empanadas.

Another new dining option is Morgan’s Comfort Food. A visit to a Kapampangan household will not be complete without good food, animated laughter, and loud conversations. Inspired from what a Kapampangan lola, or apu will prepare on a typical Sunday lunch gathering, dishes are filling, uncomplicated, and comforting, like giving you a hug from home.

Those with a sweet tooth will appreciate Monster Milkshake’s creations. They serve over-the-top milkshakes, ice cream, and bubble waffles, along with savory snacks like hotdogs and waffle fries to complement the icy comfort goodness. With the unique infusion of flavors in each milkshake, Monster Milkshake creates an unforgettable experience for everyone.

“We continually strive to make SandBox a place where everyone, young and old, can enjoy their time and appreciate the outdoors. There is something for every member of the family here,” said De Guzman.

Through the years, SandBox has attracted not only visitors from Pampanga, but also those coming from Manila and nearby provinces. The longer and now tougher Aerial Walk takes visitors through an obstacle course above ground. The Giant Swing keeps riders thrilled 10 meters up, and many are lined up for the Adventure Tower’s offerings:  rappelling, wall climbing and free fall. Other thrill seekers enjoy Avatar One, Asia’s first roller coaster zipline at 180 meters long. The open fields of Sandbox are ready for outdoor activities like camping, kite-flying, field games, and other sports.

#TheaterPH - Sa Wakas, a Pinoy Rock Musical #SaWakas2017

After seeing excerpts way back 2013, I prayed hard for this material to be restaged. 2017 is the year! :)

The Show

Sa Wakas is a critically acclaimed, homegrown musical based on the songs of one of the country’s most beloved rock bands, Sugarfree. Co-written by Andrei Nikolai Pamintuan and Mariane Abuan, with the music beautifully arranged by Ejay Yatco, Sa Wakas was one of the first to bring together the world of pop rock and theater in one groundbreaking musical. The show is created and produced by Charissa Pammit and is presented with the Manila Fringe Festival. Lighting design will be done by Miguel Panganiban, while Julian Vincent Cayabyab will design the set.

The Story

A bittersweet story set in contemporary Manila, Sa Wakas raises the timeless question of “why relationships fall apart?” What makes the show unique is its unconventional perspective, adopting an inverse chronology wherein the narrative begins at the end of the crushing breakup and works its agonizing way backwards to the relationship’s starry-eyed beginning.

The Music

Sugarfree was an alternative rock group led by Ebe Dancel that gave us beloved hits such as Mariposa, Burnout, ‘Wag Ka Nang Umiyak, Hari ng Sablay and Makita Kang Muli. Though the group disbanded in 2011, their music still resonates today and will forever be cherished by its legions of fans.

Sa Wakas, which incidentally is also the title of the band’s first album, aims to re-introduce these heart-wrenching songs to a new generation and present it with a fresh and distinct “Broadway-fied” sound. The only original song in the musical, Bawat Daan, was composed by Ebe Dancel three years ago as a central song for the show and was released recently as a single for Star Records. It swept at this year’s Awit Awards including Song of the Year, Best Inspirational Recording, and Best Song Written for a Movie/TV/Stage Play.

The Cast

The company is proud to have in its roster some of the best and most talented young stars of Philippine theater. The lead character, Topper, will be alternately played by Gawad Buhay Award winner Pepe Herrera (PETA’s Rak of Aegis) and Gawad Buhay Award nominee Vic Robinson (Cornerstone Entertainment’s Ako si Josephine). The role of Lexi will be played by Gawad Buhay Award winner Caisa Borromeo (Repertory Philippines’ Little Women) and Cara Barredo (Repertory Philippines’ A Little Princess). Free-spirited Gabbi will be played by Maronne Cruz (Cornerstone Entertainment’s Ako si Josephine) and Justine Peña (Resorts World Manila’s Cinderella). Also coming back as part of the lovable ensemble are Abi Sulit and Hans Dimayuga. Joining them are Laui Guico and Moira Lozada.

Show Details

Sa Wakas will have its much-awaited second run starting January 12, 2017 at the Power Mac Spotlight Theater in Circuit Makati. For tickets and other information, visit www.sawakasmusical.com.
