Aloy Adlawan's "Ang Katiwala" - Cinemalaya 2012


It stars Dennis Trillo as the Katiwala (caretaker). The cast includes: Ronnie Lazaro, Angelina Canapi, AltheaVega, Miggs Cuaderno, Neri Naig, Ernie Zarate, Shyr Valdez, Richard Manabat, Louella de Cordova, Aileen Lota, and Dado Jose.


SYNOPSIS: Ruben loses his job as a carpenter in a small town in Zambales where he lives with his wife EDNA and their 10-year old son, BUDOY. Desperate to make ends meet, he accepts a job as a caretaker of an abandoned property in Quezon City. Ruben soon finds out that the previous owner of the house is an important figure in the country’s history. When he is interviewed by a TV reporter about this historical figure, Ruben feels embarrassed that he knows nothing about him. Ruben soon starts reading up to get to know more about the life of this person, his accomplishments and what he has done for the people. Ruben’s fascination about the person’s life and his inevitable hero-worship irks the only friend he has in the sprawling compound, the night-shift security guard, GIMO, who jokes that Ruben is slowly being possessed by the soul of his new hero.

FILMMAKER’S PROFILE: A former Chemical Engineer by profession, Aloy Adlawan (also credited as Alfred Aloysius L. Adlawan) is a multi-awarded Filipino filmmaker-writer, producer, director, composer. His award-winning works include the screenplays “Ang Babae sa Burol”, “Ang Mga Ibon sa Dapithapon”, “Padyak”; and “Si Lolo Tasyo at ang Araw”. In 2005, he was among the finalists of the first Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival with his film “Room Boy”. His horror film “Ouija” (writer) was 2007’s biggest horror blockbuster. His other horror film “Signos (The Sign)” was awarded the Best Foreign Film at the 2007 Lone Star International Film Festival; was given an Award of Excellence at the 2007 Accolade Film Competition in California, received the Bronze Foreign Film Award at The International Filmmaker Festival in U.K, and won Best International Thriller at the 2008 New York International Independent Film and Video Festival. In 2010, he produced another Cinemalaya entry “Mayohan”, which won several major Cinemalaya awards. His television works include the hit TV shows “Paano Ba Ang Mangarap”, “Dwarfina”, “The Good Daughter”, and “Magdusa Ka”, which was nominated for Best Telenovela at the International Emmys Television Awards in 2009. He is one of Philippines’ most sought after writers in the horror genre, with a formidable body of work which includes “Ouija”, “Signos (The Sign)”, “3 Days of Darkness”, “T2”, “Condo”, “Aswang”, the “Punerarya” episode from Asian’s (or probably the world’s) longest horror film franchise “Shake, Rattle, and Roll 12”, which The Young Critics Circle singled out in 2010 as the year’s best. He also wrote for Yam Laranas the screenplay to “The Road”, the first critically acclaimed Filipino film to be commercially distributed in North America.
