#TheaterPH - AKO: Alpha Kappa Omega Set To Open On March 20!

Tanghalang Ateneo, the longest-running theater company of the Loyola Schools of the Ateneo de Manila University, caps off its 40th season, Sturm und Drang/Bagyo at Bagabag, with AKO: Alpha Kappa Omega, an adaptation of Mike De Leon's critically acclaimed film Batch 81 penned by Guelan Varela-Luarca and the Tanghalang Ateneo ensemble.

Batch 81, a modern classic in Philippine cinema screened on the Director's Fortnight of the 1982 Cannes Film Festival, follows the Alpha Kappa Omega fraternity's neophytes through their grueling initiation process, serving as a poignant critique of fraternity hazing and culture in the Philippines.

Aside from adapting the film into a play, two-time Palanca First Prize winner Guelan Varela-Luarca is also tasked to bring it to life at the Ateneo de Manila’s Rizal Mini Theater. Luarca's recent notable works include directing Desaparesidos in September 2018 and translating William Shakespeare's tragedy for Tanghalang Pilipino's 32nd season finale Coriolano. Theater veterans and TA alumni Ron Capinding and Katski Flores act alongside Tanghalang Ateneo’s promising stable of actors.

AKO: Alpha Kappa Omega is a stage adaptation of Mike De Leon’s Batch 81, which follows the harrowing journey of university student Sid Lucero and his fellow neophytes of the Alpha Kappa Omega fraternity.  Through the volley of paddles, exposure to heat and cold, the learning of secret words, and constant mind conditioning, the neophyte is conditioned to become a Frat Man. Will he survive?

Batch 81, hailed as one of the greatest movies in Philippine cinema,  is now reset in the year 2018 as a powerful commentary on our present time — of nationalism and ruthlessness, law and order and ultraviolence, trapos and the promise of change. Will we survive?

Tanghalang Ateneo’s John Sanchez is the notorious Sid Lucero, a university student studying medicine who is adamant in his decision to join the Alpha Kappa Omega fraternity.

Earvin Estioco plays Arni Enriquez, Sid Lucero's best friend whom he convinces to join the fraternity as a neophyte with him.

Ron Capinding plays Santi Santillan, a professor at the university and the oldest in their batch of neophytes.

Nico Nepomuceno plays Ronnie Roxas, Jr., a conyo neophyte whose father is a distinguished alumnus of the fraternity.

Ymo Escurel and Cholo Ledesma alternately play Pacoy Ledesma, a sheltered, freshman neophyte.
Ram Catan plays Ding Magtibay, a promdi neophyte who was bullied in the past.

Tanghalang Ateneo’s ensemble of promising actors complete the cast.

The artistic team of AKO: Alpha Kappa Omega is composed of Tanghalang Ateneo Artistic Director and Moderator Guelan Varela-Luarca (Direction and Adaptation), Tara Jamora Oppen (Assistant Director), Nicolo Ricardo Magno (Movement Design), Monica Sebial (Set Design), Hershee Tantiado (Costume Design), D Cortezano (Lighting Design), Xander Soriano (Sound and Music Design), and Zoe de Ocampo (Graphic Design).

The playdates of AKO: Alpha Kappa Omega are March 20-23, 26-30, April 2-6, and 9-13. Performances start at 7:30PM while Saturday matinee shows start at 2:30PM. Performance venue is the Ateneo de Manila’s Rizal Mini Theater at the university’s Faber Hall.
