#CulturePH - hrough the Eyes of Sulyap: Why Shell’s 59th NSAC Still Matters

There’s a quiet magic in the way we pause. Think about those moments when you catch yourself staring out the window after a long meeting, or when a photo on your phone suddenly feels heavier than pixels. That pause — that sulyap, that fleeting glance — is often where meaning hides. And this year, Shell’s National Students Art Competition (NSAC) is asking young artists to chase exactly that.

For nearly six decades, NSAC has been more than a contest; it’s been a rite of passage. Generations of Filipino creatives have stepped into its spotlight, not just to win, but to be seen. To be reminded that their stories matter, that their brushstrokes, camera angles, and digital renderings are part of a bigger cultural heartbeat. The 59th edition, themed “SULYAP,” feels like a gentle nudge to slow down in a world that rarely lets us. It’s about looking closer — at the emotions we bury, the realities we skim past, the experiences that shape us even when we don’t notice.

What makes this theme resonate isn’t just its poetic framing. It’s the way it mirrors the lives of students today. Between deadlines, side hustles, and the constant scroll of social media, pausing feels like a luxury. Yet art thrives in those pauses. A painting that captures the exhaustion of commuting, a photograph that freezes the joy of a barkada reunion, a sculpture that embodies resilience — these aren’t just entries, they’re reflections of how we live now. And in a country where creativity often doubles as survival, NSAC becomes a stage where authenticity isn’t just encouraged, it’s celebrated.

The competition remains open to college students across the Philippines, with categories spanning oil and acrylic painting, watercolor, sculpture, digital fine arts, and photography. It’s not about producing the “perfect” piece; it’s about telling a story that feels true. Each participant can submit up to two works per category, and every submission is a chance to say: this is how I see the world, and this is why it matters.

Entries are accepted from June 5 to October 5, 2026, with winners announced on December 2. But the real win happens long before the awards night. It’s in the act of creating, of pausing long enough to translate a fleeting glance into something lasting. It’s in the courage to share that perspective with strangers who might just see themselves in your work.

For professionals reading this on a lunch break, maybe the lesson isn’t just about art competitions. Maybe it’s about reclaiming our own sulyap moments — the pauses that remind us we’re more than our calendars and inboxes. Because whether you’re a student submitting to NSAC or someone just trying to make sense of a busy day, the act of looking closer is always worth it.
