#CulturePH - The Power of Getting Your Hands Dirty: How Saturday Morning Shoreline Shifts Change Executive Mindsets

Morning light breaks across the urban bay, casting a soft glow over rocky shores where city waves meet concrete revetments. Standing along the water edge before seven on a weekend, rubber boots grounded against slippery stones, you feel a distinct shift away from the familiar cadence of spreadsheet reviews and back-to-back video calls. Corporate boardrooms train leaders to solve macro-level problems through strategic plans, quarterly targets, and high-level directives. Yet, bending down to lift tangled plastics directly from the sand delivers an immediate, visceral reminder of what real, hands-on impact feels like. Unplugging from executive devices to engage in direct environmental work restores a grounded perspective that no boardroom presentation can ever replicate.

Taking that hands-on commitment directly to the shoreline, a dedicated force of over ninety team members from the Jollibee Group main office stepped out to participate in the International Coastal Cleanup in Pasay on September 19, 2026. Working side-by-side along the water, representatives from iconic household brands including Jollibee, Mang Inasal, Chowking, and Greenwich joined forces with volunteers from neighboring community organizations. Their collective effort retrieved more than 400 kilograms of accumulated shoreline waste in a single morning, protecting local marine life and coastal ecosystems from synthetic debris. This coastal initiative formed part of a nationwide mobilization, as another 266 company employees spearheaded simultaneous cleanup operations across critical waterways in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

Organized locally by SM by the Bay, the event was spearheaded internally by the Jollibee Group Foundation alongside the corporate Human Resources department. Participation marks the second consecutive year the global restaurant enterprise has mobilized its workforce for the International Coastal Cleanup, a worldwide movement that engages millions of people annually to clear marine debris from oceans, lakes, and rivers. These volunteer hours directly feed into the company’s ambitious goal of logging 10,000 annual volunteer hours under its global Joy for Tomorrow sustainability agenda, proving that large-scale corporate values thrive when translated into direct human action.

Operating as one of the world's fastest-growing restaurant enterprises, Jollibee Foods Corporation oversees an expansive global network of 20 distinct brands with over 10,700 stores and cafés spanning 33 countries. Its diversified global portfolio includes wholly-owned flagships like Red Ribbon, Tim Ho Wan, Yonghe King, Hong Zhuang Yuan, and Smashburger, alongside major stakes in global coffee and beverage leaders like The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, Compose Coffee, Milksha, and Highlands Coffee. Managing an enterprise of this scale requires embedding environmental responsibility and United Nations Sustainable Development Goals into everyday operations, balancing fast-paced commercial expansion with genuine ecological stewardship.

Recognized internationally as one of Forbes' World’s Best Employers and featured on TIME’s World’s Best Companies list, the organization demonstrates that corporate prestige means little without active community engagement. Encouraging corporate employees to swap business attire for work gloves and step onto the shoreline creates an authentic bridge between corporate responsibility statements and tangible community benefits. When corporate team members physically remove hundreds of kilograms of waste from local waters, sustainability stops being an abstract metric and transforms into a shared, personal mission.

Reclaiming purpose in our professional lives often starts when we step beyond our daily office routines to serve the broader environment around us. Bending down to clear a shoreline alongside colleagues reminds us that true leadership is built on active participation, empathy, and collective care. Moving forward with a renewed sense of responsibility ensures that as our businesses grow, our commitment to protecting the natural world grows right along with them.
