#TheaterPH - When Ghosts Wear Neon: Why We Need Stories That Dare to Make Noise - Unheard Noises by The People Diary PH

Most of us know the quiet routine of remembrance that arrives every November. We pause, we reflect, and we often dress our memories in subdued tones and soft whispers. Traditional stage readings follow a similar script, almost universally defaulting to minimalist all-black wardrobe choices on bare stages. But what happens when we strip away the expected silence and replace it with electric energy, loud visuals, and an unexpected celebration?

Picture stepping out of the midday heat of Makati City into a room where six ghosts are throwing a Halloween party. It sounds like the setup for a cheeky indie film, yet it forms the emotional heart of Unheard Voices, an original stage reading running for one weekend only on Sunday, November 8, 2026, at Kontempo Community Studio in Ayala Malls Circuit Makati. Co-presented by The People Diary, Kontempo Community Studio, Ayala Circuit Makati, and Ayala Foundation Inc., the limited-run production flips standard theatrical grief on its head. Instead of solemn black attire, the performers step into the light wearing vibrant, bold costumes that honor drag as a powerful medium for inclusive identity, creative resilience, and vivid self-expression.

At its core, the show asks us to look past the usual polished corporate narratives and sit with the raw, unspoken truths people leave behind. Across two exclusive showtimes at 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM, six monologues explore the complex personal lives, daily struggles, and ultimate fates of individuals before they passed. What makes the performance hit so close to home is the authenticity of the voices behind the scripts. These monologues were not birthed in sterile commercial writers' rooms; they were written purely out of un-workshopped passion by creators who navigate the same messy, demanding world the rest of us live in every day.

The lineup of writers reflects a rich tapestry of modern professional life. Take Dr. Ella Mae Masamayor, an internist-endocrinologist and podcast co-host who channels medical humanism into creative writing. Or Ann Figueroa, a TV music producer scoring tracks for major networks while expanding her narrative craft through international acting workshops. You will find stories crafted by Catherine Orda, a Quezon City writer and editor with publications across major news networks, alongside Janelle Capiral, a communications strategist dedicated to transformative narrative spaces. The team also features Miguel Louie B. de Guzman, a Laguna-raised development worker pursuing his MA in Creative Writing at UP Diliman, alongside fellow graduate student and former finance professional turned portraitist Myra Ho, as well as versatile dramaturg Mavs Alviar from San Pedro, Laguna.

Under the directorship of Prof. Romualdo “Ronie” M. Protacio—an Outstanding Teacher Awardee and 40-year veteran of the arts from the University of Makati—these diverse perspectives blend into a unified, resonant experience. Backed by support from Azuthai Thai Restaurant, the Collective Arts of Students and Thespians (CAST), and media partner OhOhLeo.ph, the effort marks a major milestone for The People Diary. What began as a human-centered blog has expanded into an independent writing collective dedicated to building community empathy through accessible, boundary-pushing stage readings.

We spend so much of our workweek filtering our thoughts into curated slides, polite email chains, and professional composure. Taking a seat at a one-weekend-only performance like Unheard Voices offers a rare moment to reconnect with unfiltered human experiences. Gathering in a creative sanctuary like Kontempo—a space laying the groundwork for the future Kontempo Center for Contemporary Art—reminds us that art does not always need to be solemn to be deeply meaningful. Sometimes, the most profound way to honor the past is to paint it in full color, playfulness, and unapologetic noise.
