#TheaterPH - Tanghalang Ateneo Presents "Ningning sa Silangan"
Get ready for an unforgettable theatrical experience as Tanghalang Ateneo, the longest-running theatre company in the Loyola Schools, proudly presents Ningning sa Silangan. This production marks the grand finale of its 46th season, “Eloquentia, Sapienta, Humanitas: The Ricky Season.”
A Tale of Creation, Death, and Rebirth
Ningning sa Silangan is a captivating creation story that delves into themes of hope, poverty, and greed in a small village. The narrative begins before the existence of towns, farms, or even bodies of water. Five narrators take on various roles, including Inang Kalikasan, a landless farmer, a housekeeper, a lawyer, an aging herald, and two brothers with differing visions for their home. While one brother seeks to revive their landlord father's legacy, the other dreams of embracing American industrialization. Meanwhile, Inang Kalikasan fights to tell a different story.
This Filipino translation of Jo Clifford’s A Light the Village is a parable that explores the dynamics of social change, gender constructs, and resistance. It challenges patriarchal and capitalist ideologies, urging the audience to reflect on the world we desire to create.
Honoring Dr. Ricardo “Ricky” Abad
Ningning sa Silangan is part of Tanghalang Ateneo’s tribute to Dr. Ricardo “Ricky” Abad, whose sociological approach to theatre-making championed the values of eloquence, wisdom, and humanism. Dr. Ricky’s work has inspired many, and this production builds on his legacy of theater in pursuit of social change.
