#TheaterPH - American Idiot The Musical - When theater meets the concert stage!

I've got the chance to watch American Idiot The Musical's 5th to the last show and I want to share to you my AWESOME experience! American Idiot The Musical is one of its kind in the country as 9 Works Theatrical and Globe revolutionized the theater scene with a concert feel production.

The Story

American Idiot The Musical revolves around Johnny, Will, and Tunny—three disgruntled young men searching for more thrills in life. Johnny and Tunny leave the suburban life and get disillusioned with the city. Will is forced to stay to work out his relationship with his pregnant girlfriend, Heather. Through a strange twist of fate, Tunny joins the military and is shipped off to war. Johnny finds himself trapped between a seductive love interest with Whatsername, and a hazardous new friendship with his alter-ego, St. Jimmy.

The Performance

Jason Fernandez, an alumnus of the hit reality show The Voice Philippines, shines in American Idiot The Musical. This material shows his versatility as a performer and I am really impressed. Joining him are equally stellar Miggy Chaves (frontman of Chiscosci), Nel Gomez, and Wolfgang's Basti Atardi. These men show heart stomping performances with rock and roll in them.

Joining the powerhouse leads are Alex Godinez, who was also seen in “Grease”; Aliw Award Best Actress nominee Yanah Laurel; “Miss Saigon” alumni Ela Lisondra and Ariel Reonal; former Rivermaya vocalist Norby David; GMA 7 artist Kai Atienza; and theater mainstays Sarah Facuri, Gian Gloria, Mako Alonso, Chesko Rodriguez, Shalee Vicencio, Mark Tayag and Kendrick Ibasco.

Technicalities and the People Behind It

I love how PJ Rebullida choreographed the whole show. It was well thought off. All the movements from simple to complex steps have been elaborately executed. I specially love the depiction of drug injection. Dramatic, effective and very artsy. "21 Guns" is monumental and "Holiday" shows a lot of fun. The stage that Mio Infante created was utilized well which complimented Mickey Hirai's costume design and Myrene Santos' hair and makeup. GA Fallarme made a really awesome job with influential digital images. Having a live band for the show is no joke. Hats off to Daniel Bartolome who conducts the live orchestra and Onyl  Torres who serves as  the musical director and vocal coach. Technical direction under Dong Calingacion with teammates Philleep Masaquel and Randy Salvador as technical supervisors glued the production well. JC Inocian took charge of the photography and Maine Manalansan as graphic and creative manager. Over all, Robbie Guevarra made a fantastic job on putting together the best of the best in the industry.

American Idiot The Musical talks about politics, drugs, death and relationships. A lot of people will surely relate to this material while head banging with Greenday's body of work.

Special thanks to Randy Salvador for the trust! Hope to see you next week as it closes its Philippine run. Four (4) shows remaining so be sure to book your tickets now. Let's rock and roll!
