#TheaterPH - The Night Two Pianists Made Legacy Feel Like a Living, Breathing Moment

Every now and then, a night comes along that nudges you to slow down, breathe a little deeper, and remember what beauty sounds like. That’s the energy surrounding LEGACY, a special concert happening this January 25 at the new Proscenium Theater in Rockwell—where piano music takes center stage, and two generations of artists share one musical heartbeat.

The Manila Symphony Orchestra is teaming up with pianists Carmencita Sipin‑Aspiras and Inna Montesclaros, and honestly, the idea alone feels like opening a time capsule. One artist grew up performing in Vienna and touring the world. The other was the kind of prodigious “Promil Kid” you’d root for instantly—who went from an eight‑year‑old playing recitals to sharing a stage with MSO at 11.

Now they’re stepping into the same spotlight, not as teacher and student, not as nostalgia and future, but as storytellers carrying different lifetimes of music in their hands.

Leading them is Darrell Ang—yes, the Darrell Ang—whose travel schedule alone could make anyone dizzy. He’s conducted across over twenty countries in a single season, and somehow still makes time to create moments like this one in Manila.

And of course, the Manila Symphony Orchestra—turning 100 years old—will be right there weaving everything together. If you've ever heard them live, you know the feeling: that soft, magnetic pull of being wrapped in sound that’s bigger than you but still strangely intimate.

The program itself is like a love letter to the piano. Brahms in all his drama and tenderness. Chopin in that unmistakable, sigh‑inducing way that only Chopin can manage. Sweeping overtures, quiet reflections, pieces that rock like Venetian boats, and the gorgeous, towering presence of Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 2.

And yet, what makes the night feel extra meaningful is that it’s not just a concert—it’s a fundraiser for the Basilio Manalo Scholarship Program, which helps young Filipino musicians chase the same dreams these artists once did. It’s art giving birth to more art. A musical relay race where the baton keeps getting passed on.

Whether you’re the type who grew up taking piano lessons or someone who simply loves the feeling of being transported by live music, this night promises a kind of magic you don’t get from playlists or headphones. It’s the kind of experience you keep tucked in your memory long after the final note fades.

If you’re thinking of going, consider it a date—with music, with heritage, with the future of Filipino talent.

And hey, discounted tickets for seniors, PWDs, and students never hurt.
