There is something undeniably special about stepping into The Theatre at Solaire. It’s a venue that always promises a premium night out, but every once in a while, a production comes along that completely redefines what that stage can do.
This weekend, that golden ticket belonged to GMG Productions’ international touring company of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory The New Musical.
If you think you know this story from the beloved Roald Dahl book or the classic films, prepare to have your expectations delightfully melted down and reshaped. We have seen many world-class tours grace the Manila stage, but this marks the first time we’ve experienced a touring production in Solaire that felt this fiercely immersive. From the moment the house lights dim, you aren't just watching a story unfold, you are actively being pulled straight into the center of a whimsical, living candy land.
Calling this show "eye candy" is an understatement. It is a masterclass in modern stagecraft that seamlessly marries technology with classic theatrical illusion.
What makes it an absolute magical experience from beginning to end is how incredibly intelligent the staging is. The creative team didn’t just rely on standard backdrops; instead, they flawlessly integrated cutting-edge projection design with dynamic lighting to expand the walls of the theater.
But the real magic lies in the tactile, physical elements that burst past the theater. The air is alive with bubbles, rolling smoke, dramatic lighting shifts, and bursts of confetti that cascade over the audience. It’s a full-sensory, palpable treat that keeps both the kids and the kids-at-heart gasping in pure delight.
While the visual spectacle sets the stage, it’s the brilliant cast that gives the production its beating heart.
Oliver Wong anchors the entire emotional weight of the show. His portrayal of Charlie is beautifully vulnerable, wonderfully naive, and instantly loveable. You can’t help but root for him from his very first note.
Stepping into Wonka’s velvet coat is a tightrope walk. The character can easily lean into being eccentric to the point of annoying, but Michael Dalke’s characterization is absolutely top-notch. He brings a brilliant nuance that makes you completely fall in love with his quirky, unpredictable world. His vocal performance is crystal clear, perfectly paired with razor-sharp comedic timing and incredibly strong execution of complex choreography.
There’s a distinct reason why local theatergoers highly anticipated this run, and it’s our very own Karylle. Playing Charlie’s devoted mother, Mrs. Bucket, she adds a rich, soulful layer to the family's struggle and hope. She delivered with absolute grace, reminding everyone exactly why she is a shining star on the live stage.
Is It Worth Your Golden Ticket?
In an era where we crave experiences that genuinely transport us away from the daily grind, this production delivers tenfold. It balances high-tech innovation with genuine, old-school theater magic, ensuring that nobody leaves the theater the same way they arrived.
This is worth every single Peso. It’s an enjoyable, high-energy, and completely immersive escape that feels like a sweet treat for the soul.
Don't let this one pass you by. Gather your family, round up your closest friends, and head to Solaire to experience a world of pure imagination while the gates are still open!
