#TheaterPH - Up Close and Personal - Banaue Miclat Janssen

Banaue Miclat Janssen

As a prelude to the forthcoming silver linings of her career in the arts next year, multi-talented artist Banaue Miclat-Janssen has been connecting her heart, mind and soul into a wholistic process as part of her time capsule in order to become a much more meaningful  artist.

Having worked with many co-artists over the past two decades in Manila and New York, Banaue has been praised for her openness to communicate thoughts, views and ideas by explaining the purposes of her goals. With her high level of intelligence, excellent memory, charming mannerisms, sensitivity, innovativeness, imaginativeness and loving temperament, Banaue’s career will surely fall properly into its place spelling more successes in the near future.

But even while others seem to have perceived Banaue for keeping a low profile in her career path, she has actually a very keen interest in its advancement. Quiet competence and consistency, that’s what she adheres to. In fact,  Banaue’s closest circle of friends swear by her skills on time management. She combines her duties as a wife, mother, teacher and actor in many thousand ways.

Banaue is a pure Filipino born in Beijing, China. She credits her heritage to make her heir to a unique tradition that provides intensity to her craft as an artist. The high sense of cultural awareness in China, with its constant drilling in the importance of fundamentals, and a history that goes back thousands of years, opened her senses to the ancient world of the arts. Enriching this is her claim to the Filipino culture—molded and shaped by years of colonialism, of cultural diversity, of political ruptures, and a resilience and steadfastness of spirit. It is this Filipino spirit that empowers her with the creativity that compels her to be immediate and unburdened as an artist.

Banaue’s first stage performance was as a nine year old ballet dancer in Collezion√© ’89, a recital with Philippine National Artist for Dance, Leonor Orosa-Goquingco’s “Ben-Lor Ballet”. She was introduced to the Asian performing arts of dance, song, and spoken word through the Philippine Educational Theater Association’s workshop production of Ramayana/Radiya Mangandiri in 1992. That, at twelve years of age, was when Banaue decided she wants to live the life of a performance artist.

Banaue went on to obtain a B.A. in Theater Arts under the tutelage of Professor Emeritus, Tony Mabesa, at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, and a Master of Fine Arts in Acting (MFA in Acting, a terminal degree) at the Brooklyn College of the City University of New York (Brooklyn College-CUNY). She is currently an Assistant Professor at the Department of Speech Communication and Theatre Arts, College of Arts and Letters in UP Diliman.

As a professional performer, Banaue has won an Aliw Award for Best Performance for a New Concept Production for “Ginugunita Kita” in 2015, a Best Actress Award for the Metropolitan Opera Getty Awards for Supernumeraries for “Salome” in 2009, and a Best Actress citation for NYU’s First Run Film Festival for Clarissa de los Reyes’ “Giving Care.” Banaue has released “Ginugunita Kita,” the album with Jesse Lucas on iTunes and Spotify.

She has also done plays in various languages—English, Filipino, Spanish, Japanese, and some Filipino dialects. She has performed in different countries including Germany, Japan, and has done performances off-Broadway and at the acclaimed Metropolitan Opera, Lincoln Center in New York. Some of the films she has acted in have been shown in international film festivals in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Japan, Korea, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Canada, and many more.

As a director, Banaue has worked with UP’s Dulaang Laboratoryo, Musical Theater Philippines, and most recently, for the first Fringe Manila in 2015, Joshua Lim So’s Palanca Award winning play, “Tungkol kay Angela” under Destiyero Theater Commune.

Lastly, Banaue loves to share the most precious bonding moments of time with husband Dom and four-year old son Raj.

A Cancer-born lady, Banaue sits alongside the likes of legendary and famous personalities namely Ernest Hemingway, Marshall McLuhan, Princess Diana, Meryll Streep, Robin Williams, Frida Kahlo, Carly Simon, Estee Lauder, Barbra Cartland, Cat Stevens, Cyndi Lauper, and Malala Yousafai.

Coming very soon this July, Banaue is doubly excited and challenged to don a new hat with her latest directorial project for UP Playwrights’ Theatre featuring Linda Faigao-Hall’s “The Female Heart.”

In 2017, as Banaue’s silver lining salvo continues, she will be honored to share the cultural diversity of her career path with many more surprises.

Congratulations Banaue!

#Fitness - Nickelodeon Slime Cup Run 2016!

It was my first time experiencing running with SLIME at Nickelodeon's Slime Cup Run 2016! For Slime Cup Run, Nickelodeon Philippines created this ultimate summer activity for the whole family. This is their first staged running event that everyone can join from kids, parents, grandparents and even dogs.

Well attended event. :)

Why slime? Slime is the ultimate symbol of free spirited mess and physical embodiment of the unconventional spirit of Nick. Getting slimed is an honor, which can be compared to a celebration, and truly a happy experience.

slimed!

Slime Cup Run is composed of 3 categories. 200 meter dash is open for kids aged 7 and below while the 1 kilometer distance is open for individual runners and dogs and owner tandem. The 3rd and last category is 3 kilometers which is open to families, individual runners and runners in pairs.

The race doesn't only require running as participants also have to hop, skip and crawl through obstacle courses laid-out on their way to the finish line.

Behind all the fun, Nickelodeon never forgets to extend a hand. For this event, partial proceeds of the Slime Cup Run 2016 goes to Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS).

Until our next run!

Work hard, play hard at Alviera GO PLAY!

Something's new from Alviera! Alviera Go Play is the latest addition in the play area of Alviera, Porac Pampanga. Join me as I share to you what one can expect from this interactive and fun offering.

What is Alviera Go Play?

Alviera is hosting the perfect event for families, friends and even work colleagues to cap off their summer. We’re inviting everyone on Saturday, June 11, to join us for Alviera Go Play, the world’s first game show-inspired playground.

We’ve set up a play area in Alviera in Porac, Pampanga that takes cues from popular TV shows like Takeshi’s Castle, Wipeout and Gladiators. Here, fun is taken to a whole new level with bouncy inflatables, foam, relay games, mental challenges and a bunch of wacky games you can enjoy with your friends. It will be open from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM.

Registration to the event starts one off with 10 points for a Regular Go player and 20 points for an Extreme Go Player. Like a huge outdoor arcade, each crazy fun activity requires a point to participate in. Every successful activity during the day wins you tickets. Some activities provide more tickets than others. If you run out of points, there are point refill packages available.

You can eventually exchange your collected tickets at the Prize Area for souvenir prizes like a stuffed toy, t-shirt, gadgets or perhaps even win the grand prize of a trip for 4 to Boracay.

What are the activities we can enjoy in Alviera Go Play?

REGULAR ACTIVITIES

Wacky Inflatable Challenge – Bounce, crawl, climb and conquer the course in less than 2 minutes.
Breakout Philippines Escape Room Game – Sample the country’s premier escape room game! Form a team, find clues and escape before time runs out.
The Drink Challenge – Slip and slide to get your bottled beverage’s contents on to a giant mug. Then run and tag your teammates during this relay. Finally, all of you must slip and slide back to your mug and sip the mug empty with straws.
Binocular Basketball – Can you manage 3 lay-ups in 2 minutes wearing a binocular helmet?
Human Foosball – Exactly what it sounds like, with players stuck to a moving pole and tasked with scoring a goal.
Agawan Base – Zorb Edition – Charge your way to an enemy’s base in the ultimate roll-around costume. Roll, bounce and repeat, all while in a zorb ball.
Explore the Unknown – Collect objects from different containers while blindfolded to win the prize. Nothing icky in there, right? Maybe.
Dizzy Penalty Kick – Spin around and then make a dizzy attempt to score a penalty kick, with 4 other competitors around you.
The Gladiator – Face off against an opponent on the pedestal platform while everything but the kitchen sink is thrown at you. First one to do 5 knockdowns wins!
Sumo Relay – Race against time in sumo suits!
Photo Mission – Here are 10 pictures for your team to replicate as accurately as possible. Submit them anytime you think you’ve got them perfect.
Brain Games – Your team has got to put its head together for some mind exercises to solve puzzles and illusions.
Communication Game – A team member must direct his mates to correctly arrange items on the floor, except they’re all blindfolded.
Caterpillar Run – The team steps inside a circular tarpaulin track and must walk in unison as the track passes through their hands. Sounds simple but can you do it within 3 minutes?

EXTREME ACTIVITIES

Buzzingo – An absurdly fun version of Bingo (yes, Bingo!) that will only be played 3 times during the day. It will not require points to participate but players will have to risk their tickets for Bingo cards. Winning will get you 1,000 tickets!
Extreme Jack & Poy – Risk 5 tickets and try to win 6 consecutive battles in a contest that knows no age, skill, experience or gender. The winner takes all the tickets of the losing individual.

MORE FUN STUFF

Foam Bash – Dance around the foam pit set up in front of the stage every hour as local DJs spin some cool summer hits.
Inflatable Play Area – Open for children 13 years old and below.
Food Stalls – Players and visitors won’t go hungry with a wide array of food entres.

How much will registration cost?

Regular Go Player – P800 entitled to 10 points
Extreme Go Player – P1,200 entitled to 20 points
Go Kids Player – P400 entitled to 10 points

Kids must be at least 4-feet tall to participate in any activity.

How do we register for Alviera Go Play?

Visit goplay.com.ph for payment options. You can pay online, or via bank deposit, or via walk-in to the Breakout Philippines offices along Katipunan Avenue, Quezon City.

On-site registration in Alviera on June 11, 2016 is also accepted but will be limited only!

Will we be able to play in SandBox as well with these Go Player tickets?

Alviera Go Play will be held inside the SandBox. Visitors will have an option to purchase discounted tickets to try SandBox attractions on that day.

Do I have to pay entrance fees if I won’t participate in any Go Play activities?

No. Spectators are welcome to enjoy the sights and sounds of Alviera Go Play, dance in the foam pit, take pictures, hang out and munch on goodies from food vendors. There will be some areas off limits and areas exclusively for players only. We ask that these spaces be respected for everyone’s safety.

To try any of the SandBox attractions, visitors will have to purchase discounted tickets available on that day.

How many people are expected at Alviera Go Play?

We’re expecting visitors and players from Metro Manila, Pampanga and other nearby provinces. Like many Alviera events in the SandBox, attendance usually hits the thousands.

Why is Alviera hosting such an event?

Alviera is a mixed-use, masterplanned estate of Ayala Land, Inc. envisioned to be the region’s foremost lifestyle and business center in the near future. The SandBox, with its many adventure park attractions, is its initial feature. We see it as a taste of the fun and exciting experiences Alviera holds, all done with great respect for the area’s natural landscape.

Alviera has hosted a number of signature events and Go Play once again offers that uniquely fun experience that the estate has become known for.

Will I see you there? Come and enjoy the fun!

#PressLaunch - Sony Channel Philippines brings you The Art of More!

Sony Channel Philippines brings you The Art of More,  an original Sony production, which exposes the secretive, exclusive and corrupt world of auction houses.

Walked on a red carpet today. :)

Set in the high-stakes world of New York auction houses, it follows Graham Connor (Cooke), a blue-collar young man who leverages his way into the exclusive realm of premium auction houses by exploiting connections to antiquities smuggling rings he was exposed to as a soldier before. Kate Bosworth plays Roxanna Whitman, daughter of the CEO of one of two warring auction houses, whose intrigue and drama is at the heart of the series.

The 10-episode drama is set to be viewed today, May 24, 2016 at Sony Channel Philippines at exactly 8:50 pm. As a kickoff, Sony Channel Philippines invited some member of the press to experience how it was to be in an auction.

Sony Channel Money and Auction Boards

Richie Lerma of Salcedo Auctions

Sony Channel gave us a budget of 20,000 which we can used in the auction. Richie Lerma from Salcedo Auctions facilitated the bidding process. There were 10 lots presented to us including 5 secret or mystery items which were revealed after it has been sold. Among the items up for grabs were two pairs of Cartier eyewear, a Sony Xperia Z5 mobile phone, a mud artwork by Percival Denolo, and a painting of “The Art of More” star Dennis Quaid by Odette Cagandahan.

It was an intense feeling especially when you were one of the bidders. I am sure, I'll be going to be hooked up with The Art of More as it is I immersed myself with fast-paced, fresh, star-studded peak inside the glamorous and cut-throat world of international auctions and art dealing.

TWG's Tea Appreciation Day Experience!

Welcome to TWG Tea Salon & Boutique at EDSA Shangri-La Mall

I enjoyed a funtasTEAc afternoon at TWG Shangri-La Plaza with other food enthusiasts for the Tea Appreciation Day. The afternoon tea session started by introducing ourselves to each other and share what we look forward to the event. Honestly speaking, I come to the event without anything in mind as I wanted to be surprised. All I know is, the event would be all about tea.

Sam, one of TWG's training master shared a lot of things on how TWG started.

World's finest teas

TWG Tea, the finest luxury tea brand in the world, was established in Singapore and celebrates the year 1837 when the island became a trading post for teas, spices and fine epicurean products. TWG Tea, which stands for The Wellbeing Group, was co-founded by Taha Bouqdib, Maranda Barnes and Rith Aum-Stievenard in 2008 as a luxury concept that incorporates unique and original retail outlets, exquisite tea rooms and an international distribution network to professionals. A veritable tea institution, TWG Tea is passionate about sharing its expertise and has become a point of reference for tea lovers thirsty for knowledge.

New favorite - Pu-Erh Tea.

TWG Tea tasters travel thousands of miles across the globe every year, sampling hundreds of teas in search of the most desirable harvests direct from source gardens. Offering over 1,000 single-estate, fine harvest teas and exclusive blends, as well as tea patisseries and other tea-infused delicacies, TWG Tea is internationally recognised as a true innovator with the creation of new varieties of tea every season in collaboration with the world’s most renowned estates.

Serving each tea with passion.

TWG serves single-estate teas. These are the teas which are not blended with anything. TWG Philippines has 439 different teas and is dedicated to only serve the finest teas of the world.

There is a tea farm in the Philippines and is located in Benguet but not yet formally recognized as an estate producing tea by TWG according to Sam.

Tried this muffin with different types of tea. Their TEA JELLY is a must try!

Enzo on the other hand, another TWG tea connoisseur, shared to us the types of tea and how they differ from one another.

Camellia sinensis is a species of evergreen shrub or small tree whose leaves and leaf buds are used to produce tea. Therefore, chamomile or ginger cannot be called as "authentic tea" as it comes from flower/vegetable but can just be called "herbal tea" .

Which is which?

Here are the type of teas and my takeaways during the discussion:

White tea

White Tea

This tea is considered as the purest of all tea. Tea leaves can only be harvested in China as it is the largest tea producing country. White tea has the highest anti-oxidant in all the types of tea and also has the lowest caffeine content.

Green tea

Green Tea - Japanese Method

Green tea - Chinese Method

There are 2 types of green tea. One is Japanese Method which undergo the process of steaming and Chinese Method which undergo panfrying. Green tea is believed to have the highest Vitamin C content and is considered as white wine of tea.

Blue tea

Blue Tea

There are 2 types of blue tea. One is the Chinese Oolong and the other one is the Formosa Oolong which came from Taiwan. Chinese Oolong is fermented 35 to 40% while Formosa Oolong is fermented 65 to 70% thus having a different variant. Blue tea is believe to be good for people who wishes to lose weight as it speeds up the metabolism. Blue tea has this flowery finish.
Black tea

Black tea contains the highest level of caffeine and can be almost compared to coffee. I am lucky enough to try Darjeeling tea which is considered as the Champagne of teas. Darjeeling tea can only be found in West Bengali India. It has a clean taste and runs smoothly on the throat.
Pu-erh

Pu-erh

Pu-erh starts as black tea but fermented for a minimum of 2 to 3 years. It is buried inside a jar and undergo microbial fermentation. Even though it starts as black tea, the caffeine level drops because of the fermentation process. Pu-erh 1993 is also called Victoria Beckham tea as this was used by her after her pregnancy to get back in shape. Pu-erh is best to drink at night. Tea masters shared that enjoying Pu-erh is an acquired taste.
Red tea

Lemon Bush Red Iced Tea

Rooibus Tea Bush is an authentic red tea that can only be found in South Africa. There are 14 different kinds of red tea and TWG is the only one who serves single estate authentic red tea. I really enjoyed the Lemon Bush Red Iced Tea with a hint of citrus and caramel.
Sam, ohohleo_ph and Enzo

It has been an awesome experience as I learned a lot from Sam and Enzo. I never know that there's a tea culture and there are actually 6 types of tea. I am glad to be part of the event. Thank you Dems Angeles of Geeky Kitch for the invite.
