#CulturePH - HATCH 2026: Contemporary Visions Meet Timeless Elegance at The Manila Hotel
I didn’t make it to the opening night of HATCH 2026 at The Manila Hotel, but even from afar, the exhibit feels like something more than just an art showcase. It’s a reminder of how creativity can live inside spaces layered with history, and how contemporary voices can reshape the way we see tradition.
This year’s theme, Contemporary Visions, Timeless Setting, is exactly that—a dialogue between heritage and modern imagination. Twelve Filipino artists were invited to transform the acrylic egg into vessels of identity and storytelling. It’s such a simple object, yet in their hands, it becomes a metaphor for rebirth, fragility, and possibility. Even without standing in front of the pieces, I find myself reflecting on how art often asks us to reconsider the ordinary, to see meaning in shapes we might otherwise overlook.
What makes HATCH special is not just the art itself, but the setting. The Manila Hotel has always been a place where stories linger—political, cultural, personal. To place contemporary works in its Grand Lobby is to let those stories breathe alongside new ones. It’s heritage meeting imagination, and that tension is what makes the exhibit powerful.
I think about what Marvin Kim Tan of The Manila Hotel said during the opening: that HATCH began as a platform for fresh ideas and has grown into a meaningful space for emerging talent. That growth mirrors the way art itself evolves—always shifting, always finding new ways to connect. Even if I wasn’t there in person, I feel connected to that idea.
The exhibit runs until May 2, and admission is free. I may have missed the first night, but I’m determined to see it before it closes. Because sometimes, the most insightful experiences aren’t about being first—they’re about arriving when you’re ready to listen.
