#CulturePH - Honoring a Literary Legacy: The Centennial Celebration of National Artist F. Sionil Jose
The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) invites everyone to join in the F. Sionil Jose Centennial Celebration: Congress, Conference, and Contest. This series of literary events commemorates the birth centenary of the late National Artist for Literature, F. Sionil Jose, and aims to encourage Filipinos to participate in art-making and appreciation.
A Two-Day Literary Extravaganza
This free, two-day event will take place on November 27 and 28, 2024, at The Verdure, 4/F Henry Sy Sr. Hall, De La Salle University (DLSU) in Taft Avenue, Manila. It's a fantastic opportunity for literature enthusiasts to delve into the works and legacy of F. Sionil Jose, known for his masterwork, the Rosales Saga, and other significant contributions to Philippine literature.
Celebrating the Rosales Saga and More
F. Sionil Jose's Rosales Saga, comprising five novels—Poon, Tree, My Brother, My Executioner, The Pretenders, and Mass—reflects the historical wounds of the Philippines, from colonial subjugation to social class conflicts. His other notable works include novels like Gagamba and Viajero, short story collections such as The God Stealer and Other Stories, and essays in Why We are Poor.
Event Highlights
The celebration kicks off with the annual PEN Philippines Congress on November 27, from 9 AM to 5 PM. Titled “VIAJERO: The Journey of Philippine Fiction,” the congress will highlight Jose's life and work in fiction and explore the directions of regional stories. Literary expert Jose Dalisay will deliver the Rizal Lecture, and there will be an excerpt from Tanghalang Pilipino’s play Balete, based on Jose’s novel Tree.
On November 28, from 9 AM to 5 PM, The Man from Rosales: The F. Sionil Jose Conference will feature academic discussions on Jose's legacy and the challenges faced by Philippine fiction today. Keynote speakers include Atty. Saul Hofileña Jr. and playwright Rody Vera, with a panel of scholars presenting research papers on Jose's intellectual legacy.
Young Writers Awards and Photo Exhibit
The F. Sionil Jose Young Writers Awards, revived by the Jose family, will honor select young writers. Additionally, a special photo exhibit, Memories: Photographs by F. Sionil Jose, will showcase his work as a photojournalist and cultural worker. The exhibit will be on view from November 27 to December 6 at the DLSU Libraries.
