A Night of Musical Masterpieces
The concert kicks off with the vibrant and lively “Capriccio Espagnol” by Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. This five-movement suite, inspired by Spanish folk melodies, was originally intended for a solo violin but evolved into a full orchestral piece that captures the essence of Spanish music.
The evening will culminate with Robert Schumann’s “Symphony No. 2 in C Major,” a piece that took the Romantic-era composer 10 months to complete due to his health struggles. First performed in 1846, this symphony is a testament to Schumann’s resilience and genius.
Sara Sant’Ambrogio’s Star Performance
Sara Sant’Ambrogio will be performing Edward Elgar’s “Cello Concerto in E Minor,” a deeply emotional piece first played in London in 1919. This concerto reflects the sorrow and turmoil of the post-World War I era and is a perfect showcase for Sant’Ambrogio’s expressive playing.
Sant’Ambrogio is no stranger to the spotlight. She first gained international acclaim as a winner at the International Tchaikovsky Violoncello Competition in Moscow. Since then, she has performed with orchestras around the world, from Beijing to San Francisco. As a founding member of the Eroica Trio, she has also collaborated with artists like Sting and Joshua Bell.
A Journey Through Music
Sara’s musical journey began with her father, John Sant’Ambrogio, a principal cellist with the St. Louis Symphony. She honed her craft at the Curtis Institute of Music and The Juilliard School, where she won the All-Juilliard Schumann Cello Concerto Competition, leading to her debut at Lincoln Center.
