#TheaterPH - Spring Awakening Blooms in Makati: The Sandbox Collective Kicks Off 2026 with a Bold New Season
Theater lovers, mark your calendars—February 2026 is set to bring a wave of raw emotion, electrifying music, and powerful storytelling to Makati City. The Sandbox Collective is opening its 2026 season with the Tony Award-winning rock musical Spring Awakening, staged at the brand-new Black Box at The Proscenium Theater in Rockwell Center.
This isn’t just another revival. Under the fresh artistic leadership of Sab Jose, the production promises to be a daring and heartfelt exploration of adolescence, identity, and rebellion. Set in 19th-century Germany, the musical dives deep into the lives of teenagers grappling with their changing bodies and the silence of the adults around them. With a score that pulses with alternative rock energy, Spring Awakening transforms youthful angst into a powerful anthem for self-discovery and empowerment.
Directed by Gawad Buhay nominee Andrei Nikolai Pamintuan and musically led by the acclaimed Ejay Yatco, the show brings together a stellar creative team including choreographer Nunoy Van Den Burgh, intimacy director Missy Maramara, and designers Wika Nadera, Raven Ong, Gabbi Campomanes, and D Cortezano.
Sab Jose describes the production as more than just a coming-of-age story. “It’s about reclaiming one’s body, voice, and destiny,” she shares. “We want to spark conversations and empower young audiences through brave, advocacy-driven storytelling.”
And for aspiring performers, there’s exciting news: The Sandbox Collective is holding open auditions on August 31 and September 1, 2025. It’s a chance to be part of a show that’s not only artistically bold but socially resonant.
Spring Awakening is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI), New York.
