#CulturePH - Lights, Camera, QC! How Quezon City Just Became the Philippines’ Ultimate Film City

Something big just happened in the heart of Metro Manila, and it’s not another food park or a new mall. This time, it’s all about the movies—and not just watching them, but celebrating the people and stories that make Philippine cinema so special. Quezon City, the place where so many of our favorite films were born, has just been named a UNESCO Creative City of Film. That’s right—QC is officially on the global map for film lovers and creators everywhere.

It’s a proud moment, but it’s also a nod to the city’s roots. Think about it: from the golden days of Sampaguita Pictures to the iconic works of Lino Brocka, Dolphy, Nora Aunor, and Fernando Poe Jr., Quezon City has always been the backdrop for Filipino storytelling. Now, with this new recognition, QC is stepping into the spotlight in a whole new way.

But what does this mean for everyday folks like us? For starters, it’s about making sure the people behind the scenes—the writers, camera crew, editors, and everyone who brings stories to life—are protected and supported. With policies like the Eddie Garcia Law, fair wages and safe working conditions are becoming a bigger priority. It’s a win for the artists and workers who pour their hearts into every frame.

And it’s not just about the pros. The city is launching the QC Screen Academy, a training hub where anyone with a passion for film can learn the ropes, whether you’re a total newbie or a seasoned pro looking to level up. Imagine a place where your wildest film ideas can actually take shape, surrounded by mentors and fellow dreamers.

Then there’s the Global Producers Exchange—a space for Southeast Asian filmmakers to connect, share ideas, and maybe even cook up the next big regional hit. And with the Southeast Asia Film Summit happening every year, QC is set to become a meeting ground for industry leaders, cultural agencies, and creative minds from all over the region.

What I love most about this moment is how it honors both the legends and the everyday moviegoers. Mayor Joy Belmonte put it perfectly: QC Film City is now a name that belongs to every filmmaker, artist, and storyteller who’s shaped the city’s vibrant film heritage. But it’s also for the QCitizens who deserve access to quality films and the chance to see their own stories on the big screen.

This isn’t just a trophy for the shelf—it’s a call to keep creating, collaborating, and dreaming bigger. It’s about building a city where stories matter, where creativity is part of everyday life, and where anyone can be part of the action.

So next time you walk past a film shoot in QC, or catch a local indie at the cinema, remember: you’re in the country’s official Film City. And who knows? Maybe your story is the next one waiting to be told.
