#CulturePH - Metro Manila’s Most Magical Christmas Tree: Why Shangri-La Plaza Feels Like the Heart of the Holidays

Every year, as soon as November rolls in, there’s a certain electricity in the air—like the city itself is humming with anticipation. But nothing quite says “the holidays are here” like the moment Shangri-La Plaza flips the switch on its iconic Christmas tree. This isn’t just any tree—it’s a massive, glittering spectacle that seems to float midair, suspended in the Grand Atrium, and it’s become a must-see for anyone who wants to soak up the season’s magic.

This year, I found myself swept up in the crowd on November 15, craning my neck with everyone else as the lights blinked to life. But Shangri-La Plaza doesn’t just light a tree—they put on a show. The theme, “A Symphony of Sparkle,” was more than just a name. Imagine a full orchestra, a live band, and some of the country’s best performers—like the Philippine Madrigal Singers, Ballet Manila, and powerhouse vocalists Johann Enriquez and Sheena Lee Palad—all coming together to tell the story of Filipino Christmas traditions. Caroling, Simbang Gabi, family gatherings—every note and dance step felt like a love letter to the season.

And just when you thought the night couldn’t get any more glamorous, Gucci hosted an exclusive preview of their Cruise 2026 Collection, complete with cocktails from Juniper by Josh Boutwood. It was the kind of event where you could spot Manila’s style set mingling under the twinkle of fairy lights, everyone dressed to the nines and ready to toast to the holidays.

But what really makes Shangri-La Plaza special isn’t just the glitz. It’s the way the whole place transforms into a wonderland. This year’s décor is all about crystal brilliance and timeless ornaments, arranged so artfully that you feel like you’re walking through a dream. The gold and green backdrop, the floating ornaments, the scent of pine and cinnamon in the air—it’s nostalgia and luxury all wrapped up together.

Of course, the tree lighting is just the beginning. The mall has lined up a whole calendar of events that make it impossible not to get swept up in the festivities. There’s the “Wishes & Wheels” raffle (hello, Lexus LBX!), weekend performances by choirs and dance groups, and even a Boxing Day Sale for those of us who love a good bargain hunt after Christmas. And if you’re a movie buff, mark your calendar for December 25, when the Metro Manila Film Festival kicks off at the Red Carpet Cinema.

The grand finale? A fireworks display on December 30 that promises to send off the year with a bang. It’s the kind of tradition that makes you want to gather your favorite people, grab a cup of hot chocolate, and just bask in the glow—literally and figuratively.

So whether you’re looking for a place to make new memories, revisit old ones, or just feel a little more connected to the magic of the season, Shangri-La Plaza is where the holidays truly shine. Trust me, you’ll leave with your heart (and maybe your shopping bags) a little fuller.
