#TheaterPH - From Mozart’s Elegance to Mahler’s Fire: A Night with the MSO

There are evenings when music doesn’t just fill a room—it transforms it. On May 30, the Manila Symphony Orchestra is set to do exactly that at the Proscenium Theater in Makati, as they continue their centennial season with a program that journeys from the refined brilliance of Mozart to the sweeping emotional landscapes of Mahler.

The night begins with Mozart’s Sinfonia concertante in E-flat, a piece that feels like a conversation between two souls. Rising Filipino artists Emanuel John Villarin on violin and Christian Wrona on viola will bring that dialogue to life, weaving precision with restraint in a way that makes Mozart’s music feel timeless yet intimate.

Then comes Mahler’s Symphony No. 1—a work that doesn’t just ask for attention, it demands it. Expansive, unpredictable, and deeply human, it’s the kind of piece that pulls you through joy, tension, and reflection in one sweeping arc. To mark the 80th anniversary of the UST Conservatory of Music, members of the UST Symphony Orchestra will join the MSO in a side-by-side performance, a collaboration that feels like a celebration of both legacy and future.

Guiding the evening is Venezuelan conductor Joshua Dos Santos, whose career has spanned continents and whose energy promises to ignite every note. Together, the MSO and its collaborators will remind us why live symphonic music continues to matter—it’s not just sound, it’s shared experience.

For those who’ve ever felt the thrill of a melody carrying them somewhere unexpected, this night is one to mark on the calendar. Whether you’re drawn to Mozart’s elegance or Mahler’s fire, the MSO’s centennial season is about more than music—it’s about connection, history, and the joy of being swept away.
