#TheaterPH - Philippine Opera Company's MASTER CLASS all set to open on May 15

I still remember the first time I watched someone teach: the room went quiet, not because the teacher demanded it, but because everyone wanted to catch the small, honest moments that make a craft real. That’s the feeling the Philippine Opera Company brings to Terrence McNally’s Master Class — a play that looks like a lesson but lands like a life story. With Menchu Lauchengco‑Yulo as the fierce, fragile Maria Callas, this production turns a public masterclass into something intimate and unforgettable.

Master Class imagines Maria Callas giving voice lessons at Juilliard. What starts as technical coaching — posture, breath, phrasing — slowly becomes a map of her life: choices, losses, and the cost of being brilliant. The play mixes spoken scenes with short operatic pieces, so you don’t need to be an opera expert to follow along. What matters is the human truth behind the music.

Menchu Lauchengco‑Yulo as Callas

Menchu is a performer who knows how to hold a room. She brings both authority and tenderness to Callas — the kind of presence that makes you listen even when the words are sharp. Watching her, you’ll see how a single correction can carry a memory, and how a voice can be both weapon and confession. Her performance is the kind that makes you think about your own stubborn loves and regrets.

This is not a flashy show. It’s quiet in the best way: small gestures, honest lines, and music that arrives like a memory. You’ll laugh at the blunt moments, wince at the hard truths, and leave thinking about the people who taught you and the things you kept. It’s a play that asks you to pay attention — and rewards you for it.
