#CulturePH - The Danger of Describing Everything as Burnout: Why Your Constant Exhaustion Might Need a Second Look

We live in a culture that treats exhaustion like a badge of honor. When we struggle to log out of our laptops at the end of a grueling week, or when a flight of stairs leaves us inexplicably breathless, we have a whole vocabulary ready to explain it away. We blame a relentless work schedule, the natural slowing down that comes with aging, or the general mental load of managing a modern life. We tell ourselves we just need a quiet weekend, a better sleep routine, or a long-overdue vacation to reset our baseline.

But sometimes, that deep-seated, heavy fatigue isn’t something you can sleep off. There is a fine line between the mental drain of professional burnout and a physical signal that your body’s internal chemistry is waving a red flag.

When we lump every symptom of low energy into the convenient bucket of being overworked, we risk missing the quiet beginnings of complex health issues. Medical experts are drawing attention to a critical blind spot in public health: a group of rare blood conditions known as Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS)—recently reclassified more accurately as Myelodysplastic Neoplasms. This form of blood cancer essentially causes a malfunction in the bone marrow, turning what should be a highly efficient blood cell factory into a producer of defective cells that fail to mature and die off far too early.

The real challenge with this condition lies in how quietly it mimics the everyday complaints of aging and professional exhaustion. When your bone marrow stops producing a healthy supply of red cells, white cells, and platelets, the resulting shortages manifest as persistent fatigue, recurring minor infections, and easy bruising or small purple spots on the skin. For a busy adult juggling responsibilities, a slow recovery from a common cold or a general lack of stamina feels easy to dismiss.

Unfortunately, dismissing these signs often creates a significant barrier to getting the right answers. A decade-long review at Makati Medical Center tracking hundreds of patients revealed that the condition is heavily underdiagnosed and underestimated locally. A major piece of the puzzle is diagnostic access; the study found that a vast majority of patients—roughly 85 percent—were unable to access advanced cytogenetic testing. Without these deep-dive laboratory evaluations, individuals miss out on a definitive diagnosis during the exact window when early intervention can make the greatest difference in long-term quality of life.

Navigating a complex medical concern can feel overwhelming, but looking at the human side of modern treatment strategies reveals a deeply encouraging shift. Consider the story of a Manila-based business owner in his late 70s whose journey began with months of vague, unexplained weakness that standard lifestyle adjustments couldn't fix. After seeking out a hematologist and undergoing a thorough bone marrow evaluation, he faced a long, undulating road of supportive therapies and escalating blood transfusions. Because of his age, aggressive interventions like stem cell transplants were off the table.

The turning point arrived when his medical team shifted focus toward a targeted management strategy designed explicitly to boost his red blood cell levels. Through structured, consistent cycles of therapy, his body responded remarkably, eventually eliminating his need for blood transfusions altogether. Today, his health routine consists simply of regular maintenance visits to monitor his iron levels. Rather than being sidelined by his diagnosis, he is actively running his operations, enjoying retirement, and spending quality time with his first granddaughter.

This perspective shifts the narrative entirely. A complex diagnosis isn’t a dead end; it is a prompt to change strategy. Finding answers starts with simple, accessible steps, like requesting a routine Complete Blood Count (CBC) during your annual check-up, which can flag hidden irregularities for a primary physician to review. From there, a specialist can chart a precise path forward.

As we balance the demands of our careers and personal lives, paying closer attention to our physical baselines is a fundamental responsibility. Persistent symptoms are not an inconvenience to be pushed through or ignored; they are our bodies asking for a closer look. Taking that look seriously ensures we can protect our energy, our health, and the future moments we want to show up for.
