#CulturePH - SM Cares Celebrates Philippine Environment Month with a Nationwide Call for a #SMWasteFreeFuture
June was more than just another month on the calendar—it was a powerful reminder that collective action can spark real environmental change. In celebration of Philippine Environment Month 2025, SM Cares, the corporate social responsibility arm of SM Supermalls, rallied communities across the country to take part in a series of meaningful, eco-driven activities under the banner of a #SMWasteFreeFuture.
From biking and beach cleanups to youth-led art and film, the campaign was a vibrant mix of movement, education, and action—all designed to inspire Filipinos to live more sustainably.
Pedaling Toward Greener Cities
To kick things off, 26 SM malls hosted community bike rides in celebration of World Bicycle Day. These weren’t just casual rides—they were a statement. Families, fitness enthusiasts, and eco-advocates came together to promote greener mobility and healthier lifestyles, proving that sustainable living can start right in your neighborhood.
Cleaning Up, One Shoreline at a Time
In honor of World Oceans Day, 18 SM malls led coastal and river cleanups in partnership with the DENR, local governments, youth groups, and private sector allies. Over 5,000 volunteers rolled up their sleeves and collected more than 30,000 kilograms of waste—an inspiring show of what’s possible when communities unite for the planet.
Conservation Through Culture and Creativity
SM Cares also brought environmental awareness to life through art, film, and music. Highlights included:
- Green Flicks, a short film competition that gave students a platform to spotlight urgent environmental issues.
- Kalikharawan, a youth-led celebration of sustainability through music and visual arts.
- Bike-Hike-Plant, a unique event that combined cycling, reforestation, and volunteerism.
- A nationwide forum on the UN Sustainable Development Goals, reinforcing the importance of partnerships and education in building a sustainable future.
A Shared Responsibility
“These efforts reflect our deep commitment to help build a culture of sustainability in every community we serve,” said Engr. Liza Silerio, Vice President for Corporate Compliance and SM Cares Program Director for Environment. “An #SMWasteFreeFuture isn’t just a goal—it’s a responsibility we proudly share with our mall-goers, employees, and partners.”
SM Cares’ initiatives support several UN Sustainable Development Goals, including Climate Action, Life Below Water, Life on Land, and Partnerships for the Goals—proving that sustainability is not just a buzzword, but a long-term mission.
40 Years of Building Better Communities
As SM Supermalls celebrates 40 years of evolving with every Filipino, it continues to lead the way in sustainable development—integrating green design, energy efficiency, and disaster resilience into its 88 malls nationwide.
Because when it comes to protecting the planet, every ride, every cleanup, and every small act of conservation counts.
