#CulturePH - From Dangdut to Discovery: How AXEAN Festival Is Rewriting Southeast Asia’s Music Story
There’s a particular kind of magic that happens when music breaks down barriers. One moment you’re in a mosh pit, the next you’re swept into a dangdut ring dance, and suddenly you realize—genre, language, and borders don’t matter. That’s the energy AXEAN Festival 2026 brought to Bali this September, drawing over 4,000 attendees in three days of music, exchange, and connection.

Held at Jimbaran Hub for the third consecutive year, AXEAN has grown into Southeast Asia’s first intra-regional showcase and conference festival. What makes it special isn’t just the lineup—it’s the way it creates space for discovery. Indonesian headliner Ndarboy Genk turned the crowd into one communal dance floor, proving that music rooted in local tradition can resonate across cultures.
For co-founder Piyapong Muenprasertdee, or Py, that’s the point. “I love seeing people enjoy music regardless of genre, style, or language,” he shared. And this year, that vision expanded beyond the stage. Pre-event activities partnered with Bali’s creative communities—like Craft Hotel in Ubud and Amplitude skate park in Seminyak—bringing panel discussions and live performances into unexpected spaces.
The festival wasn’t just about audiences; it was about industry connections too. Speed meetings, pitching sessions, and panels brought together professionals who might never otherwise share a room. Partner initiatives included brunches with Sounds Australia, programming from Korea Spotlight by KOCCA, and collaborations with France’s CNM. Even the VIP lounge and closing after-party became hubs for organic networking, reminding everyone that sometimes the most important conversations happen outside formal sessions.
One of the biggest highlights was AXEAN’s partnership with Seattle-based KEXP, marking the platform’s first-ever presence in Asia. Twelve Southeast Asian artists recorded Live at KEXP sessions in Bali, filmed against the cliffs of Locca Sea House and Puri Bhagawan. For artists, it was a rare chance to reach international audiences that Southeast Asian music often struggles to access.
Beyond the music and meetings, AXEAN leaned into community spirit. A Southeast Asian street food hawker center and arts-and-crafts area made the festival family-friendly, while partners like Tunecore and Empire supported a seamless three-stage setup. It wasn’t just a showcase—it was a cultural gathering, where food, art, and sound blended into one experience.
Looking ahead, AXEAN is already planning to build on these gains. With songwriting camps and collaborations across Asia, the festival aims to strengthen Southeast Asia’s place in the wider music ecosystem. As Py put it, “Our long-term vision is to raise the Southeast Asian music ecosystem and strengthen its place within the wider Asian one.”

That vision feels more urgent than ever. In a world where global music often overlooks regional voices, AXEAN is proving that Southeast Asia has stories worth telling—and sounds worth hearing. It’s not just about exporting talent; it’s about creating a platform where discovery feels intentional, where connections feel authentic, and where music reminds us that we’re part of something bigger.
For the thousands who danced, listened, and connected in Bali this year, AXEAN wasn’t just a festival. It was proof that Southeast Asia’s music scene isn’t waiting to be discovered—it’s already here, vibrant and unstoppable.
