#TheaterPH - Nobody Warns You That the Popular Table Has a Body Count: Inside Manila's Wicked New Theater Obsession
You remember the hierarchy even if you've spent the last decade pretending you don't. The cafeteria seating chart that somehow mattered more than your grades. The exact tone of voice certain girls used when they decided whether you existed that day. The way a single lunch tray, held at the wrong angle near the wrong table, could reroute your entire social future. Most of us survived high school by making ourselves smaller, quieter, more agreeable, just to avoid becoming the target instead of the audience.
That memory is exactly what a new production is banking on when it opens in Manila this January, and it isn't being subtle about it. GMG Productions, in association with Bill Kenwright Ltd. and Paul Taylor-Mills, is bringing Heathers the Musical to The Theatre at Solaire for a limited run from January 21 to February 7, 2027, marking the Philippine premiere of one of the most quietly ferocious cult musicals of the last decade.
If the title alone doesn't ring a bell, the 1989 film starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater probably will. Heathers followed Veronica Sawyer, a smart, invisible teenager who gets adopted into the most powerful and most terrifying clique at Westerberg High, three girls who all share the same first name and the same instinct for cruelty. The stage adaptation, built on book, music, and lyrics by Kevin Murphy and Laurence O'Keefe, took that story and turned it into something even sharper: a musical that lets its characters sing their way through popularity, obsession, and the particular violence that teenagers can do to one another without anyone noticing until it's too late.
What makes this Manila run worth paying attention to isn't just the source material. It's the trajectory. The show has already proven, repeatedly, that its appeal isn't nostalgia alone. It sold out its original 2013 Los Angeles premiere, transferred to New York's New World Stages in 2014, then went through a full creative overhaul for its 2018 West End debut, gaining new songs and a sharpened script along the way. From there it picked up three separate West End runs, multiple UK and Ireland tours, a 2019 WhatsOnStage Award for Best New Musical, a 2022 global streaming release on The Roku Channel, and a 2025 return to New World Stages that broke the venue's advance sale record before immediately extending. This is not a show coasting on a familiar poster. It keeps finding new audiences because the thing it's actually about, the desperate math of belonging, hasn't gone out of style since 1989 and probably never will.
Leading the Manila cast as Veronica is Filipino performer Gerardine Sacdalan, stepping into a role that has become something of a rite of passage for the actors who play her, in a production where she'll be surrounded by an almost entirely international ensemble bringing West End and touring credentials to Solaire's stage, including Louis Hearsey as the magnetic and unstable J.D., and Liberty Stottor as the reigning Heather Chandler.
GMG Productions CEO Carlos Candal has been candid about why this particular title earned its spot in a season that already includes Harry Potter: A Yule Ball Celebration, Cirque Alice, and The Play That Goes Wrong. He's described the company's ongoing effort to strike a balance between introducing Filipino audiences to bold new titles and revisiting beloved stories in ways that still feel current, and he singled out Heathers specifically for being funny, unafraid, and built around a story about friendship and identity that hasn't lost any of its relevance.

That relevance is worth sitting with for a second, because it's easy to assume a story about scrunchies and croquet mallets belongs safely in the past. It doesn't. Anyone who has watched a group chat splinter over who got invited where, or felt the particular anxiety of being cc'd or not cc'd on something at work, already understands the mechanics this show is built on. Status hasn't disappeared just because we grew up. It just changed venues.
For anyone who wants in before the general crowd, the ticketing rollout mirrors the show's own obsession with who gets access first. UnionBank cardholders get presale access from September 8 to 11, offering 10 percent off, followed by a waitlist onsale on September 12 with the same discount, before tickets open to everyone on September 13. Fittingly, even buying a ticket to this show means deciding how badly you want to be on the list.
It's worth noting that this is not a musical for younger audiences or anyone hoping for a lighthearted throwback. The production carries an age recommendation of 14 and up, with content involving strong language, gunshots, flashing effects, and mature themes including suicide and eating disorders, all treated with the same unflinching honesty that made the original film so unsettling in the first place.
What Heathers the Musical ultimately understands, and what makes it worth a seat at Solaire in January, is that the popular table was never actually about popularity. It was about who got to decide your worth, and how quickly that decision could be taken away from you the moment you stopped agreeing to play along. Most of us left high school still carrying some version of that lesson. This is just the first time Manila gets to watch it sung back at full volume.
