#CulturePH - One Million Trees for Cebu: How Aboitiz and GCash Are Turning Everyday Actions Into Climate Resilience
Think about the last time you tapped your phone to pay for coffee or sent money to a friend. It felt routine, almost invisible. But what if those small digital actions could grow into something tangible—like a forest? That’s the vision behind the new partnership between Aboitiz Foundation and GCash, which aims to plant and nurture one million trees across 1,200 hectares in Balamban, Cebu.
The CarbonPH x GForest Project is more than a tree-planting drive. It’s a five-year initiative designed to restore ecosystems, support communities, and strengthen climate resilience. For Aboitiz Foundation, it builds on a 40-year commitment to protect Cebu’s forests and watersheds through its CarbonPH program. For GCash, it expands the reach of GForest, a digital platform that has already planted 4.9 million trees by turning everyday app activities into green energy points.
“CarbonPH is about looking beyond the number of trees we plant. It is about restoring entire ecosystems and making sure they continue to provide value to people and communities for generations,” said Ginggay Hontiveros-Malvar, President of Aboitiz Foundation. Her words underscore the ambition: this isn’t just about numbers, it’s about landscapes, biodiversity, and livelihoods.
The project will combine agroforestry, indigenous and native trees, and mangrove rehabilitation. Agroforestry integrates tree-growing with sustainable livelihoods, ensuring communities benefit directly. Indigenous trees help restore biodiversity, while mangroves strengthen coastal protection against climate risks. It’s a holistic approach that recognizes restoration as both ecological and social.
Michelle Fernandez, Mynt’s Head of Corporate Sustainability and Communications, explained how GForest makes sustainability part of everyday life: “We believe sustainability becomes more meaningful when it is made part of the everyday actions people already take. GForest puts this principle into practice by transforming the green energy points earned by GCash users into tangible environmental outcomes.”
That’s the beauty of this partnership: it bridges digital participation with on-the-ground action. Millions of Filipinos can contribute by simply using the GCash app, while local communities in Cebu take the lead in planting, maintaining, and protecting the restored areas. It’s collective action at scale, powered by technology but rooted in human effort.
Over five years, the one million trees will become part of CarbonPH’s larger journey—a 40-year ambition to restore 40,000 to 71,000 hectares across the Central Cebu Protected Landscape and beyond. For Cebu, this means healthier watersheds, improved water security, stronger climate resilience, and more sustainable livelihoods. For the rest of us, it’s a reminder that climate action doesn’t always require grand gestures. Sometimes, it starts with the tap of a button.
