#TheaterPH - Stage Stories and Golden Memories: Dulaang UP’s ‘Para Kay Tony’ Honors a Theater Legend
There’s something magical about stepping into a theater and knowing you’re about to witness a piece of history. This November, Dulaang UP is inviting everyone to do just that with “Para Kay Tony: Tungo sa Ginintuang Alaala”—a heartfelt tribute to their founder and National Artist for Theater, Tony Mabesa. It’s not just a show; it’s a celebration of nearly five decades of creativity, courage, and community.
The twin bill format is a treat for theater lovers and newcomers alike. First up is “Kalahating Oras sa Isang Kumbento,” a classic by Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero (translated by Lilia F. Antonio), which follows Yolanda, a student searching for comfort after being expelled from her convent school. The story is raw, relatable, and beautifully staged by Lloyd Sarmiento Uy and Erika Estacio, with a cast that brings every emotion to life.
Then, the spotlight shifts to “May Katwiran ang Katwiran” by National Artist Rolando Tinio. This play takes us on a journey with Senyor, a wealthy haciendero, and his servant as they cross mountains and face challenges that test their will to survive. Directed by MJ Briones and Charles Yee, the cast delivers a powerful performance that’s both thought-provoking and deeply human.
But “Para Kay Tony” is more than just two plays—it’s a love letter to the spirit of Dulaang UP. For 48 seasons, this group has been a home for classic and experimental works, a launchpad for artists, and a space where stories are told with heart and honesty. This tribute is part of a bigger journey leading up to their 50th anniversary, and you can feel the excitement and pride in every scene.
Whether you’re a longtime fan or just curious about what makes UP’s theater scene so special, this is the perfect chance to experience it firsthand. Shows run throughout November at the IBG-KAL Theater in UP Diliman, with tickets available online and onsite. And here’s a bonus: UP students, faculty, and staff get a special discount, making it even easier to join in the celebration.
So grab your friends, pick a date, and get ready to be moved by stories that honor the past while inspiring the future. “Para Kay Tony” isn’t just a tribute—it’s a reminder of how art connects us, challenges us, and keeps our memories golden.
