#ArtPH - A Celebration of Form and Balance: Arturo Luz Returns to the Spotlight in “Streamlined II”

Art lovers and design enthusiasts have something special to look forward to this June. “Streamlined II,” a stunning tribute to the late National Artist Arturo Luz, opens its doors at the Art Center in SM Megamall on June 3. Presented by Renaissance Art Gallery and curated by artist and critic Cid Reyes, this exhibition is more than just a showcase — it’s a journey through the elegant, disciplined world of one of the Philippines’ most iconic modernists.

Arturo Luz’s work has always stood apart. With a style rooted in simplicity, precision, and balance, his art speaks volumes through restraint. From his early figurative paintings inspired by Rufino Tamayo to his later abstract compositions influenced by Paul Klee, Luz consistently pursued a visual language that was both refined and deeply expressive.

His subjects — cyclists, musicians, carnival performers, and still lifes — are rendered with a masterful economy of line and form. Over time, Luz moved beyond traditional materials, experimenting with burlap, plywood, and even broken tiles, always pushing the boundaries of what art could be. His later works, inspired by travels across Asia and India, transformed architectural forms into serene, linear landscapes in earthy, monochromatic tones.

But Luz wasn’t just a visionary artist. He was also a cultural leader, playing key roles in institutions like the Luz Gallery, the Museum of Philippine Art, and the Design Center of the Philippines. His influence helped shape a more minimalist, contemplative aesthetic in Filipino art — a shift from the festive to the refined.

“Streamlined II” offers a rare opportunity to experience this evolution firsthand. The exhibit is accompanied by a limited edition monograph, beautifully designed by Dopy Doplon with photography by Wig Tysmans — a perfect keepsake for collectors and admirers alike.

Catch the exhibit from June 3 to 16 at the Art Center, 4th Floor, Building A, SM Megamall, Mandaluyong City. Whether you’re a longtime fan or new to Luz’s work, this is a show that invites you to slow down, look closely, and appreciate the quiet power of great design.
