#TheaterPH - Virgin Labfest Turns 20: VLFXX “Hinog” Brings Bold New Stories to the Stage This June
This June, the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ iconic black box theater transforms once again into a vibrant space for fresh voices and fearless storytelling. Celebrating its 20th year, the Virgin Labfest (VLF) returns with VLFXX: Hinog—a showcase of 12 brand-new one-act plays that are as ripe and ready as the festival’s theme suggests.
Running from June 11 to 29, 2025, at Tanghalang Ignacio Gimenez, this year’s edition continues VLF’s legacy of spotlighting untried, untested, and unstaged works. It’s a space where emerging and seasoned playwrights alike bring their boldest ideas to life—no filters, no compromises.
Fresh Scripts, Fierce Stories
From political satire to deeply personal dramas, this year’s lineup dives into themes of identity, grief, faith, family, and the absurdities of everyday life. Expect everything from a mystery game gone wrong in TBT: Takbo, Batang Tondo to a surreal encounter at a cemetery in Anniversary. There’s also a Lenten exhibit with a twist, a trolley ride with a secret, and a daughter chasing her dreams in Don’t Meow for Me, Catriona.
The festival also revisits three standout plays from last year, including Identite, Pagkapit sa Hangin, and Sa Babaeng Lahat—each one offering a fresh take on generational conflict, healthcare ethics, and the intersection of religion and sexuality.
More Than Just a Show
Beyond the stage, VLFXX: Hinog is also a hub for learning and collaboration. Theater Talks, Playwrights’ Fair, and the Writing Fellowship Program offer audiences and aspiring artists a peek behind the curtain. Whether you’re a theater newbie or a longtime fan, there’s something to spark your curiosity and creativity.
Catch the Festival
Shows run at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., with educational events scheduled at 5 p.m. It’s a full day of theater, conversation, and discovery—perfect for anyone craving stories that challenge, connect, and inspire.
