#CulturePH - 14 Years of iJuander: Rediscovering Hong Kong Through Filipino Eyes
For over a decade, iJuander has been more than just a travel show—it’s been a celebration of Filipino culture, curiosity, and connection. Now in its 14th year, the show marked the milestone with a vibrant two-part special set in none other than Hong Kong, a city that feels both thrillingly foreign and comfortingly familiar to many Filipinos.
Hong Kong has long been a favorite getaway for Pinoys, and with over a million Filipino tourists visiting in 2024 alone, it’s clear that the city holds a special place in our hearts. This anniversary special wasn’t just about sightseeing—it was about uncovering the Filipino stories woven into the fabric of Asia’s World City.
Hosts Empoy Marquez and Susan Enriquez took viewers on a journey that felt personal and heartfelt. They met Ace Chong and Deborah Sy, two Filipino photographers whose love story blossomed among Hong Kong’s dazzling cityscapes. Their tale is a reminder that sometimes, the streets of a foreign city can lead you right to home.
Food, of course, played a starring role. From the comforting flavors of “Angel’s,” a Filipino eatery run by longtime Hong Kong residents Angelo Reyes and Mary Jean Silva, to the legendary dim sum at Lin Heung Lau and fresh seafood in Sai Kung, the culinary adventure was rich and satisfying. Empoy and Susan’s shared love for hearty rice meals made every bite feel like a warm hug.
But Hong Kong isn’t just about food and city lights—it’s also a haven for nature lovers and thrill-seekers. The volcanic rock formations of Sai Kung, the scenic hike at Dragon’s Back, and the indoor surfing fun at Groundswell offered a refreshing contrast to the urban buzz. And for families, Ocean Park—with its adorable twin pandas—remains a timeless favorite.
Through it all, iJuander reminded us that travel is more than just movement—it’s about connection. Whether through shared meals, familiar faces, or new discoveries, Hong Kong continues to be a place where Filipino culture thrives and evolves.
As iJuander celebrates 14 years of storytelling, it continues to inspire us to explore, appreciate, and embrace the world with a uniquely Filipino lens.
