#TheaterPH - An Evening of Brazilian Elegance: Guitar, Cello, and Symphony at BGC
This August, music lovers are in for a rare treat as the Manila Symphony Orchestra (MSO) brings a vibrant fusion of classical and Brazilian sounds to life in a concert that promises to be both soulful and exhilarating. Set against the intimate backdrop of Bayanihan Hall at the British School Manila in BGC, Taguig, the performance on Saturday, August 9, 2025 at 7:30 PM is more than just a concert—it’s a cultural celebration.
Titled “Brazilian Guitar and Cello,” the evening features an exceptional lineup of international and local talent: world-renowned guitarist Fabio Zanon, Juilliard-trained cellist Fabio Presgrave, award-winning soprano Stephanie Quintin, and the dynamic conductor Marlon Chen, who has been leading MSO since 2019.
The program is a rich tapestry of musical storytelling, divided into two parts:
🎼 Part 1 opens with Bachianas Brasileiras No. 7 by Brazilian legend Heitor Villa-Lobos—a piece that elegantly marries Baroque structure with the rhythmic soul of Brazil. It’s followed by Concierto de Cámara by Filipino-Chinese composer Jeffrey Ching, a symbolic blend of five nationalities and musical traditions, performed by guitar, cello, soprano, and strings.
🎶 Part 2 dives deeper into Latin flair with Radamés Gnattali’s Concerto No. 4 for Guitar and String Orchestra, a lyrical blend of samba, choro, and bossa nova. Then comes Astor Piazzolla’s Le Grand Tango, a passionate showcase of the cello’s expressive power. The evening closes with Ária and Dança from Villa-Lobos’s Bachianas Brasileiras No. 4, a joyful fusion of European form and Brazilian folk dance.
Each piece is a journey—sometimes introspective, sometimes fiery—but always captivating.
