#TheaterPH - Kaliwaan 2025: A Raw, Filipino Take on Pinter’s Tale of Love and Betrayal

This August, the Philippine stage welcomes a hauntingly intimate production that dares to unravel the complexities of love, loyalty, and the quiet ache of betrayal. Kaliwaan, a Filipino translation of Harold Pinter’s acclaimed play Betrayal, is set to captivate audiences with its emotionally charged storytelling and minimalist elegance.

Translated by Guelan Varela-Luarca and directed by the internationally celebrated Loy Arcenas, Kaliwaan doesn’t just retell a story—it dissects it. The narrative unfolds in reverse, tracing the aftermath of a seven-year affair between a woman and her husband’s best friend. As time rewinds, the audience is invited to witness the slow erosion of trust and the fragile negotiations of love and desire.

The cast features powerhouse performances from three of Philippine theater’s finest: Missy Maramara as Emma, Ron Capinding as Robert, and Nor Domingo as Jerry. Their chemistry and restraint bring a quiet intensity to the stage, making every glance and silence speak volumes.

Behind the scenes, a stellar creative team brings Kaliwaan to life. From Giancarlo Abrahan’s dramaturgy to Charles Yee’s set design, Tata Tuviera’s costumes, and Ninya Bedruz’s lighting—every detail is crafted to heighten the emotional tension. Sound designer Arvy Dimaculangan, intimacy director Jenny Jamora, and graphic designer Zoë de Ocampo round out the team, ensuring a production that’s as visually compelling as it is emotionally resonant.

Kaliwaan runs for two weekends only—from August 22 to 31, 2025—at The Mirror Theater Studio, located on the 3rd floor of the SJG Building, 8463 Kalayaan Avenue, Makati. With just 10 performances, including evening shows on Fridays and both matinee and evening shows on Saturdays and Sundays, this is a limited engagement you won’t want to miss.

The show runs approximately 90 minutes without intermission, making it a perfect evening escape into the depths of human connection.
