#CulturePH - Cinemalaya 21: A New Wave of Filipino Cinema Arrives This October

This October, the beloved Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival is charting an exciting new course. Now on its 21st year, Cinemalaya is embracing fresh horizons with the theme “Layag: sa Alon, Hangin, at Unos”—a celebration of Filipino stories that are bold, resilient, and deeply moving.

From October 3 to 12, film lovers can catch ten full-length features and ten short films across three vibrant venues: Shangri-La Plaza, Ayala Malls Cinemas, and Gateway Cineplex 18. This marks a significant moment for the festival, which has traditionally called the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) home. With CCP’s ongoing rehabilitation, Cinemalaya is bringing its spirit of discovery and artistic integrity to new spaces, ensuring that the tradition of championing Filipino filmmakers continues to thrive.

Shangri-La Plaza steps into the spotlight as the festival’s main hub for the first time, promising a fresh experience for moviegoers. Ayala Malls Cinemas, a steadfast supporter of Cinemalaya for over two decades, remains a welcoming space for local artistry. And joining the lineup this year is Gateway Cineplex 18, opening its doors to showcase the unique voices of independent filmmakers.

The excitement is palpable among venue partners. Shangri-La Plaza’s Arrianne M. Nadurata shares, “This partnership is a testament to our commitment to local film and culture. We’re thrilled to bring daring new stories to our screens.” Ayala Malls Cinemas’ Yvette Roldan echoes this enthusiasm, highlighting the enduring collaboration that celebrates the boundless spirit of Filipino cinema. Irene L. Jose of Gateway Cineplex 18 adds, “It’s an honor to host these important films and amplify the voices of independent creators.”
