#TheaterPH - Dulaang UP’s 48th Season: Bringing the Stage Back Home
There’s something special about returning to a place that feels like home, especially when that place is filled with stories, creativity, and the energy of live theater. Dulaang Unibersidad ng Pilipinas (Dulaang UP) is doing just that as it launches its 48th season, inviting audiences to rediscover the stage as a space for both reflection and celebration.
This year’s theme, “Paano umuwi nang may pagpapasya?” asks us to consider what it means to come home with intention. Under the leadership of new Artistic Director Robert Arlo Deguzman, Dulaang UP is embracing its legacy as a hub for learning, exploration, and social critique. Deguzman shares that his role is to respond to the needs of the community, overseeing productions that showcase both the hardships and triumphs of Filipinos. It’s about creating works that mirror reality, but also bring us to places of joy, sadness, and bold questioning.
Honoring Legacies and Exploring New Narratives
The season opens in November with “Para kay Tony: Tungo sa Ginintuang Alaala,” a twin-bill production that pays tribute to National Artist and Professor Emeritus Antonio “Tony” Mabesa. The first play, “Kalahating Oras sa Isang Kumbento” by Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero (translated by Lilia F. Antonio), follows Yolanda, a student seeking comfort after being expelled from her convent school. Directed by Lloyd Sarmiento Uy and Erika Estacio, this piece explores themes of belonging and resilience.
The second half features “May Katwiran ang Katwiran” by National Artist Rolando Tinio, where a wealthy haciendero and his servant embark on a journey across the mountains, facing obstacles that test their survival. Directed by MJ Briones and Charles Yee, this play highlights the political and artistic perspectives of UP Diliman students, making it a powerful reflection of the times.
Looking ahead to early 2026, the season continues with “Ang Kaliitan ng Kasalukuyan,” an original work by Deguzman that delves into the experiences of diasporic Filipinos—those who contemplate their origins and connections to community from afar.
The Stage as Home
For Assistant Professor Roger Federico, Dulaang UP is more than just a theater—it’s a space that feels close to the heart, a place to return to whenever you seek comfort or inspiration. This season marks Federico’s first term as managing director, and together with Deguzman, they’re shaping a program that highlights the stage as a home for everyone.
Dulaang UP’s 48th season is part of a multi-year journey leading up to its 50th anniversary. Since its founding in 1976, Dulaang UP has been the official theater and production arm of the Department of Speech Communication and Theater Arts at UP Diliman, consistently championing Filipino stories and artistry.
