#TechPH - Bridging Dreams: How Eastern Communications Is Connecting Classrooms and Communities Across the Philippines

The digital divide in the Philippines is real—many families and schools in remote areas still struggle to get reliable internet. While most barangays have a cellular signal, only a small fraction enjoy free Wi-Fi or fiber optic connections. For students in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas, this gap means missing out on vital learning resources and opportunities.

Eastern Communications, together with Unconnected.org and the Department of Education, is changing this story. Project Maaasahan is a multi-year initiative that’s already brought free internet and digital literacy programs to four schools across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, with more on the way. For over 800 students and 30 teachers, the world has suddenly become a lot bigger—and brighter.

Take Pao-Pao High School in General Santos City, where students from indigenous communities travel up to four hours a day just to attend classes. Thanks to Project Maaasahan, what was once a distant dream—fast, reliable internet—is now a reality. “Project Maaasahan is not just about providing connectivity. It is a bridge of hope, progress, and change,” shares Principal Dexter Tejedor. “Even at the top of a mountain, knowledge and opportunity can still reach every student.”

But Eastern’s commitment goes beyond just connecting classrooms. The company is nurturing the next generation of innovators by supporting STEM education and digital literacy. Through partnerships with organizations like TeamAsia and the Payatas Orione Foundation, Eastern has given public school students immersive experiences, such as trips to The Mind Museum and tech career talks, inspiring them to dream bigger and reach higher.
