#CulturePH - From Trash to Transport: Shell Turns Plastic Waste into Bike Racks for a Greener Metro
In a creative twist on sustainability, Shell Philippines is giving plastic waste a second life—this time as bike racks. Through a bold new initiative, the company has transformed a staggering 3,000 kilograms of discarded plastic into 110 bike racks now being installed across Metro Manila and Southern Luzon.
This isn’t just about recycling—it’s about reimagining how we move, live, and care for our environment.
A Circular Solution to a Growing Problem
The Philippines faces a mounting plastic waste crisis, but Shell is showing how businesses can be part of the solution. By purchasing plastic credits from PCX Markets, Shell helped fund the collection and processing of plastic waste through EFT Philippines, a Davao-based SME that upcycles waste into functional outdoor items.
The result? Durable, upcycled bike racks that support both sustainable mobility and the informal waste sector—creating a ripple effect of environmental and social impact.
More Than Just Bike Racks
The first 55 racks were installed at Shell Mobility stations in early 2025, with another 55 set to roll out later this year. But this project is about more than infrastructure—it’s a statement. It’s about showing that waste can be a resource, and that sustainability can be woven into everyday life.
Shell’s broader goal is to integrate circular practices across its operations, aiming to use 30% recycled plastic in Shell-branded packaging by 2030. In the Philippines, the company is also working with PCX Markets to support a range of recycling and social impact projects that keep plastic out of nature.
A Greener Ride Starts Here
Whether you’re a daily cyclist or just someone who cares about the planet, this initiative is a reminder that small changes—like where you park your bike—can be part of a much bigger movement.
