#MusicPH - Lights, Camera, Symphony: Manila Symphony Orchestra Brings Hollywood to Life This June

Get ready for a night where the magic of cinema meets the grandeur of live orchestral music. On June 28, 2025, the Manila Symphony Orchestra (MSO) is rolling out the red carpet for its second major concert of the season—“A Night in Hollywood”—at the ALIW Theater in Pasay City. It’s not just a concert; it’s a cinematic celebration brought to life by one of the country’s most beloved orchestras.

A Star-Studded Musical Affair

This special evening will feature a dazzling lineup of international talent. Hungarian cellist Zoltán Onczay and American guest conductor Angel Velez will join forces with the MSO, along with composers and conductors from the Los Angeles Film Conducting Intensive (LAFCI). Together, they’ll deliver a week-long collaboration that culminates in a performance that promises to be nothing short of spectacular.

Expect a blend of timeless Hollywood classics and fresh, original compositions written for the silver screen. From sweeping scores to intimate solos, the program is designed to stir the soul and ignite the imagination.

What’s on the Program?

The evening’s repertoire is a rich mix of old and new. Highlights include:

  • Hungarian Rhapsody by David Popper, featuring Zoltán Onczay on cello
  • A tribute to legendary film composers Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, and Henry Mancini, arranged by none other than John Williams
  • Seven original works by LAFCI composers, including:
  • Heart of a Warrior by Sophia Bass
  • Seeming Chrysalis by Julia Sanchez
  • Theme from Stolen Realm by Jennifer Jolley
  • Sigh of Spring’s Farewell by Yuxuan Liu
  • Concert Prelude on “Chan Mali Chan” by Mohamad Rasull
  • Journey Through the Celestial Gate by Robin Raisch
  • Mosaic Mambo by Noah N. Zubia-Sanchez, conducted by Ricardo Reyna

And of course, no Hollywood-themed concert would be complete without the music of John Williams. Audiences can look forward to beloved themes from Harry Potter, E.T., Jurassic Park, Schindler’s List, Superman, and more—each one performed live by the MSO with soloists Alessio Benvenuti, Jeanne Rafaella Marquez, and Zoltán Onczay.

Meet the Maestros

Angel Velez is a conductor with a résumé as cinematic as the music he leads. From Star Wars: The Clone Wars to The Mandalorian, his work spans film, television, and live concerts around the globe. His passion for storytelling through music makes him the perfect guest conductor for this Hollywood-inspired evening.

Zoltán Onczay, a celebrated cellist with a deep love for both classical and contemporary music, brings his award-winning artistry to the stage. His mission to promote Hungarian music and support young talent adds a meaningful layer to his performances.

A Global Collaboration

The presence of LAFCI composers adds a unique dimension to the concert. These rising stars in film music are bringing their original works to life with the MSO, offering audiences a rare chance to hear the future of film scoring—live and in person.
