#TheaterPH - A Dazzling Finale: Ballet Manila Welcomes Mariinsky Ballet Stars for Don Quixote’s Philippine Debut

There’s something magical about the stage when it brings together global artistry and local passion—and this August, Ballet Manila is doing just that. As the company celebrates its 30th anniversary, it’s closing its Pearl Year Performance Season with a breathtaking production of Don Quixote, headlined by two of the brightest stars in the ballet world: Kimin Kim and Renata Shakirova of the legendary Mariinsky Ballet.

This marks a historic moment for Philippine ballet. For the first time ever, Kimin Kim, the first foreign male principal dancer in Mariinsky Ballet’s storied history, will perform in the country. Known for his gravity-defying jumps and magnetic stage presence, Kim brings the role of Basilio to life with unmatched flair and finesse.

Joining him is the radiant Renata Shakirova, who returns to Manila after her unforgettable performance in Giselle last year. This time, she takes on the fiery role of Kitri—one of her signature characters—bringing her signature blend of strength, grace, and storytelling to the stage.

A Celebration of Excellence

For Ballet Manila Artistic Director Lisa Macuja Elizalde, this production is more than just a performance—it’s a dream realized. “Having Kimin Kim and Renata Shakirova perform Don Quixote on our stage is a dream come true,” she shares. “Their artistry, strength, and star power will make this production truly unforgettable.”

Set to dazzle audiences at the Aliw Theater in Pasay City, the show runs on August 22 at 8:00 p.m., and August 23 and 24 at 5:00 p.m. It’s a grand finale that promises to be as bold and passionate as the story it tells.
