#TheaterPH - Maria Makiling Takes Center Stage in Philippine Ballet Theatre’s Newest Full-Length Ballet
This July, the Philippine Ballet Theatre (PBT) brings to life one of the country’s most beloved legends with the premiere of its original full-length ballet, Maria Makiling. A celebration of Filipino folklore, heritage, and artistry, this new production reimagines the iconic guardian of Mount Makiling through powerful choreography and an evocative musical score.

Set against the lush backdrop of Laguna, the ballet tells a timeless tale of love, betrayal, and the enduring spirit of a diwata who watches over her people and the land they call home.
A Creative Collaboration Rooted in Filipino Identity
Maria Makiling is the third collaboration between PBT Artistic Director Ronilo Jaynario and award-winning composer Paulo Zarate, following the success of Ibalon (2023) and Sarimanok (2024). This time, the duo explores a more grounded narrative—one that reflects the values of community, love, and integrity.
“I wanted to tell a story that grounds us,” shares Jaynario, who spent formative years at the Philippine High School for the Arts in Mt. Makiling. “This ballet explores the enduring power of love, the pain of loss, and the importance of preserving nature and heritage.”

Zarate, known for his dynamic musical storytelling, crafted a score that blends Filipino and Spanish influences—think kundimans with a touch of flamenco. “We wanted the music to reflect the emotional depth of the story and the cultural roots of Maria Makiling,” he explains.
A Story of Love, Loss, and Legacy
The ballet follows Maria Makiling as she becomes the object of affection for three men: a proud Spanish officer, a scholarly educator, and a humble farmer. Her choice sets off a chain of events that leads to heartbreak and betrayal. In the end, Maria retreats from the world, her spirit remaining a quiet force of protection and hope.
A Cast That Brings the Legend to Life
Sharing the role of Maria Makiling are Gabby Jaynario and Jessa Tangalin, each offering a unique interpretation of the mythical diwata. Opposite them, Matthew Davo and Justine Orande alternate as Juan, Maria’s love interest, bringing emotional nuance to a character caught between romance and tragedy.

The production is co-presented by Philippine Airlines and supported by the Los Baños Tourism Office and cultural historian Roberto Cereno, ensuring that the portrayal of Maria Makiling remains true to her roots.
